One for #mastoadmin - I have reason to believe the UK government may ban Twitter within a week or two, so you may see an influx of users.

@GossiTheDog and a friendly preemptive reminder to, uh, long term members of our happy mastodon community: if the first thing you say to someone who’s come is “you’re a bad person for not coming sooner!” they’re going to delete their account and tell everyone else not to bother trying

@0xabad1dea @GossiTheDog and we also need to remember that very few other social media sites have norms around alt text and many aren't that into content warnings so its going to take a while for newbies to pick up those habits here

@GossiTheDog Really can't see that happening given that thousands of British companies and organisations (including the government itself) almost exclusively use X.

@Umiamz @GossiTheDog same. They will talk a good talk, but be fearful of doing anything.

Any of those companies and organisations - including HMG - that are still on Twitter have made a public statement that they support fascism and child porn.
Nothing but contempt for their whinges.

@GossiTheDog Hmmm.. I'd wager money that we won't see anything as decisive on the topic - or if we do, it will only be temporary (i.e. a ban wouldn't last more than 3 months as some "deal" will be done for something or other about the USA that reverts it).

Ditto not self-censoring in order to not make "the algorithm" downrank their posts.
There are many aspects of the Fedi culture that I really like (and some about how some people behave that rubs me rather the wrong way), and/but many of those are also exactly ones that people have been trained for decades by commercial asocial media to *not* do. Unlearning those habits isn't something that just happens.

@Umiamz What would the Chancellor of the Xcheckor have to say about the ban? @GossiTheDog

@GossiTheDog And the first idiot with "it's not Mastodon, it's the fediverse" will appear.

@GossiTheDog When you say you "have reason to believe", is that anything beyond the articles about Ofcom (e.g. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/ckgjzknepvzo)? Like, do you have insider info in some way?

@0xabad1dea @GossiTheDog @stonebear2 It’s like training a dog. When you’re teaching a dog a trick and the dog finally does the thing, don’t punish them for not doing it sooner.

@GossiTheDog You may actually see a surge in VPN usage.
Anyway, this would be a Net Neutrality infringement.
