    i should be so much better at guitar by now than i am— how could i be so bad at this? worse than anyone else whoever tried to teach themselves? i was good at piano. why is guitar so hard? my hand can’t do it. strumming evenly is impossible. still fiddling with and fumbling the pick. Still can’t play a solid F chord. waaaa #guitar

      @Mercurial

      Take heart. We all hate the F even after years of playing it.

      The first 8 chords or so are easy and the learning curve all of a sudden becomes vertical. It kills many many learners.

          @Mercurial how long is "by now"? If it's a week, don't worry. Twenty years, then maybe you need to look at how you're learning.

          Tip to improve evenness of strumming, use a metronome to keep time and start slow.

              .
              it can't be this if you're good at piano, but those are things I blame on my short little fingers. I can barely touch my thumb to my pinky, and holding a pick while being loose enough to strum is very difficult for me.
              .
              I spend more time paring down the necks of my guitars as small as possible and a little too far to be practical for big handed musicians, and tweaking the action and nut height as low as possible - this makes playing the F possible and deadens the B (A string) less when I play a G. 💜

                Ok here goes. #Splain incoming.

                The first fret is by far the hardest to press down. you don't really notice it when you play the basic chords, but it's very much the case. so when people learn the F-bar, they learn the chord well-nigh the hardest place on the fretboard. This it why it remains difficult for more experienced players too. So moving it up two frets and learning it as a G chords is a way of getting the grip right without the undue pressure from playing the first fret.
