I've managed to convince my 5 year old he shouldn't touch the hoover. Now all he wants to do is the hoovering. He's just asked if he can do the whole house on Sunday? I replied "if you have to" Not sure if this is a cleaning hack or gas lighting and child abuse.

@fesshole a friend's parents instituted the rule that young children were only allowed to be downstairs after 8pm if the kids were doing housework. I think your 'fess is the perfect segue into that sort of arrangement. Embrace the cleanliness!

@fesshole why not both?

@fesshole pay them pocket money now for doing chores and it'll form a habit for later in life where they expect to help out with household work and don't just expect free money from you.

Yup. When my two were little and getting toward preschool, my mum (their Nan) told me "oh, if you want the older one to do something, just forbid it".
I said "amazing. How did you figure that out?" She said, "well first I had you, then I was a schoolteacher"

@fesshole Unfortunately he'll get bored with it in five or ten minutes and want to watch something on TV/iPad. Your dreams of unpaid cleaning will crumble into dust.
How do I know this? I used to be a five year-old.
