The AI Gigafactories call is now open.
Today, we launched a call for tenders to establish up to 7 AI Gigafactories across Europe, boosting Europe’s computing capacity and unlocking more than €30 billion in investment.
I am pleased to see Member States, industry, and the Commission coming together to build these facilities, which are key to strengthening our technological sovereignty.
This is a milestone for Europe in becoming an AI Continent.@HennaVirkkunen You and the EU are set to enlarge US Big Tech’s power at the expense of EUs own autonomy, climate, environment and democracy.
If you haven't noticed the world is burning and dirty data centres is absolutely not what humans need now.
-
So, just to confirm: you observed the US become dominated by billionaires and exploitative companies who are throwing trillions or dollars at technology that provides marginal (at best) benefits to society and entrenches their power, and your reaction was 'the EU should do that too!'?
For comparison, the amount that you're burning on this is more than twice as much as you'd need for the EU to build a competitive range of memory-safe sovereign CPUs from microcontroller up to server class devices and port most open-source software to run on them. This would reduce the attack surface for all EU infrastructure significantly and provide strong sovereignty guarantees.
Can you share how you did a cost-benefit calculation and decided that chasing a big-tech fad was the best return on investment for the bloc?
@david_chisnall @HennaVirkkunen
on the other hand, 30 billion , over a few years, for capex, is not that much money for the EU
right ?and IF you accept that machine learning is AI, THEN alpha fold is a clear example of great benefit to society
also, I think it is true that for the last 200 years, *every new promising tech, canals, railroads, etc, has seen a huge boom bust in CAPEX

This is a milestone for Europe in becoming an AI Continent.@HennaVirkkunen can we at least wait with GPU shopping until the bubble bursts? and can you start with building PV+storage+grid *first* for some future datacenters instead of more fossil gas like the US is doing it

@digitaleu
@EUCommissionWhat are our options as member countries and as citizens to prevent more of these datacenters from being built?
Can we opt out of having our data and identities processed by datacenters?
What is the commission and European parliament doing to protect us from the harmful effects of datacenters, including:
- Air pollution, associated with illness and climate change;
- Water pollution and heat dumping;
- Noise pollution and quakes;
- Using improportonate amounts of electricity from the common power grid and driving up electricity prices for everyone;
- Supplementing their electricity with polluting diesel and fossil gas powered generators;
- Using improportonate volumes of municipal water, especially during heat waves in which our governments are restricting water for personal use?
Thank you and have a nice day.

Stop feeding trees, water and electricity the natural world to an economic lie thats going to crash.Take care of the people and planet and their needs instead of the bigtech bros.
It isnt very hard to see the road you are taking is going nowhere.

This is a milestone for Europe in becoming an AI Continent.Right, so we don't have enough water to cool our existing nuclear power plants or irrigate fields that produce our food, so I'm sure this is a brilliant idea!
Just make sure to put them somewhere out of reach from the fires. (We are probably running out of water to fight those effectively too, but as long as we can create AI slop, we'll be fine?)
Please reconsider, @HennaVirkkunen - the value really isn't there.

@failedLyndonLaRouchite @HennaVirkkunen
It's not a huge amount in comparison to the total budget, it's an enormous amount in comparison to most other individual projects that the EU is investing in.

This is a milestone for Europe in becoming an AI Continent.@HennaVirkkunen yaaaay now european impoverished neighborhoods can live next to shitty ass datacenters just like american ones!
Honestly, it's kinda sad to see the EU having become a shell of it's former self, shitting on human rights, forcing citizens into poverty, forcing small and medium sized businesses (especially in the starting stage) to go insolvent and close for the benefit of large US tech corporations, and now pledging to make living conditions around these planned datacenters worse for the people living there, putting more strain on the electricity grid for overhyped autocorrect instead of,,,yk,,,ACs so your citizens don't fucking die beneath your feet, but it's all fine as long as the shareholder value is good enough, right?
Which lobby group bribed y'all this time?

I am very much against Europe becoming an "AI continent" for a lot of reasons and will fight against all AI-datacenter projects near me in Austria.
Be aware that your plan is not something we as the general public approve of! -

And speaking of morons, you'd have to be one to think this is a good idea, that, or wilfully blind.
I don't know anything about you but as a person with wealth in a position of power I expect you're either out of your depth and too much of an asshole to admit it, or a lying monster.
I'd put good money on you being both.

@HennaVirkkunen This is just about the worst idea imaginable. Some would compare it to tulipmania on horse steroids - but at least tulips are real & people like them.
Please come to your senses, quickly.
@HennaVirkkunen - and just in case it's unclear what I am talking about, even if AI was useful, which it's not, and safe, which it's not, and fair, which it's not, and in line with the planet's environmental needs, which it's not, and legal, which is extremely debatable: https://www.somo.nl/eus-data-centre-expansion-will-fast-track-profits-and-power-for-us-big-tech-and-investors/
