@gabrielesvelto I've seen people do LLM API calls to do a job a few regexes could do, but this takes the cake

@gabrielesvelto This wasn't about reminding the guy of something but about having "fun" with an AI basically running amok on his computer. He got a reminder that it is not a good idea to have it running without supervision this way. And he got away cheaply. It could have burned his credit card buying on Amazon.

@dummzeuch I don't want to kink-shame but this guy's idea of fun is peculiar

@gabrielesvelto Among other things, it's a pretty good example of how you need to understand how your tools actually work, because there are different tools for different jobs, when a major marketing pitch for "AI" is that it's an all-purpose tool and you don't need to understand how it works.

@gabrielesvelto In a programming class, I'd written a program that looped over a list multiple times, when I could have written it to just run through the list once. It took a half a second instead of a hundredth of a second. But, that's a few orders of magnitude, and in real-world applications, it adds up.

It's a common beginner's mistake that someone relying on "AI" tools wouldn't notice.

That's one thing that always puzzles me

Why do people insist on asking ChatGPT to do a simple arithmetic calculation when there's a calculator app on their phone?

              https://youtu.be/I3SmXM1eSMg?t=4m45s
At 4:45, after asking to halve a measurement the app just won't shut up.

@gabrielesvelto I’m sorry this really made me laugh so hard 😹
The last part of your post made me hear Gregory Johnstone screaming this as his “monthly referee” persona 😹
But yes, it’s sad and ridiculous that we have come to this… a worse “WALL·E” dystopia 🫩

Yes, this. You can set a simple alarm on a phone, and change the label from 'Alarm' to 'Get Milk'.

It will remind you reliably and for free.

@gabrielesvelto if you paid $20 for a book to teach you any other way to do that you paid too much but you would have to read the book

@gabrielesvelto don't worry soon Gemini will do it for free... Since we have already given Google our souls already, not sure what they will take in return for that....
