@Sylvhem Remember when GIMP devs called a Black GNOME contributor a monkey? I remember. They're also the reason a certain infamous gangstalking forum has a thread on me.

    Krita rocks though.

@Sylvhem i love inkscape and gimp, but can we all agree that gimp needs to change its name and get a real designer to make new tool icons?

@tito_swineflu @Sylvhem I mean, we can agree all we want (and I do), but time and again they’ve said they aren’t going to change the name. Better just to use a different product. Krita and Affinity are both free, and so much better.

@Sylvhem gimp is trash. It literally hasn’t changed in any meaningful way in 26 years. It is lightyears behind every photo editing software. Decades ago it was a credible alternative, but today it’s worthless. They should just shutdown that project.

            @Purple @Sylvhem
            GIMP is trash.

Its designed by software engineers interested in graphics programming, not artists or creators. They take no input from anyone who uses their product seriously or casually - none. They are incredibly defensive of their inappropriate name.

Ill never give them a nickel.

@starlily @Purple @Sylvhem yup. The spend all their time on color space theory and smart select is still using pixel value similarity algorithms from the 1980s.

            Fucking hell.

@Purple @Sylvhem I also despise GIMP's user experience. Mostly just because it's different and abstruse compared to what adobe has made me expect.

@Netraven @Purple @Sylvhem I loved gimp for simple cropping and drawing tasks, because it opened so fast (0.5 seconds). The new version 3 takes 4 times that to open... I guess they now matched opening speed on windows and linux 😂

                        I think it does.

And the now-free Affinity has Canva/AI slop options embedded in the thing, so unless you can get your hands on Versions 1 or 2 I don't recommend it anymore.

I think this issue with software like GIMP (or well, GIMP specifically as I've tried it before) is that it just doesn't work intuitively.

GIMP imo is one of the most frustrating pieces of software to exist, where nothing ends up working the way you expect it to, or want it to. I don't mean this to be disrespectful to the people who work on it, it probably works wonderful for them and that's awesome, but not for a large group of people.

Why these AI clones are getting popular instead is because they basically look and work exactly like software people already know how to use. It's slop, but it's the slop they know.

@Purple @Sylvhem I learnt GIMP directly. So it feels natural to me. I think "GIMP is unintuitive" complaints are mostly "GIMP is unfamiliar".

@Sylvhem I learned how to use GIMP over time but it feels backwards even without any experience with photoshop. It improved a lot when they docked its windows by default. But layers, selections, gui layouts on highres screen, that all can be improved a lot.

@Purple @Sylvhem they don’t work for those people (yet)

After using GIMP for 20 years on I'd say that the issue with software like Photoshop (or well, Photoshop specifically as I've tried it before) is that it just doesn't work intuitively.

It is not that GIMP or Inkscape is not intuitive, it is – just Photoshop user intuition was trained against the GIMP UX. The same with LO, Inkscape and almost any other FLOSS software.

@ohir @Purple @Sylvhem I felt right at home in Inkscape, but that's probably because its UI is really similar to (old?) CorelDraw.

@Sylvhem Remember when GIMP devs called a Black GNOME contributor a monkey? I remember. They're also the reason a certain infamous gangstalking forum has a thread on me.

                                          Krita rocks though.

@noracodes @Sylvhem was it reported to GNOME's CoCC?
