It's pro'lly true they think they can serve more ads if they keep the user on their site, but that disregards the entire ad network. Moving around the web users are served literally hundreds of ads - there's simply no way to cram all of that into one Google page & they'd be worthless if there was.
- or rather more worthless; GGL has been diminishing the value of ad spending for years already.

@jwcph@helvede.net I've kind of started to accept the theory that whatever economic or capitalist models we're trying to apply to any of this simply don't make sense. These companies are no longer trying to make money. They're trying to outspend each other and most certainly outbullshit each other in the name of capturing some theoretical "infinite market" of the future, where he who controls the AI controls the universe.
No one is thinking about long term profitability of anything, as no one believes projections in that space are even possible. They're YOLOing like crazy, because they all have the same AI brain worms telling them the they need to serve the Basilisk or else...
Hopefully that eventually manages to run all of those companies to the ground, before they manage to destroy society and the environment.
