The EU is set to sell our most sensitive data to the US for visa-free travel
The European Commission is finalising talks with the Trump administration on the 'Enhanced Border Security Partnership' (EBSP) Framework Agreement to keep visa exemptions for EU citizens travelling to the US. Read our analysis of the leaked EBSP framework agreement, and our call to EU leaders to resist US pressure and protect our safeguards
️ https://edri.org/our-work/the-eu-is-about-to-sell-our-most-sensitive-data-to-the-us-for-visa-free-travel/@edri Why would anyone want to go to Trumpistan anyway? But does this imply sharing data even for non travellers?

@edri thank you for being on top of this!
PS. The announcement of the important article starts with "The European Commission"..
Wouldn't it be a good idea to then also tag @EUCommission in the post?
Why? It's not as if they don't know what they're doing. Or do you think they need to know their anti-human rights shady dealings have been found out? Maybe better to share this news with journalists?

In case anyone missed the news about the US leftists (and keep in mind this is with respect to Miller) As terrorists.
Probably what they have in mine is the green party in the UK. So think about any left of center party declared terrorists that kind of thing

@edri
What does this mean for people who are not travelling to the US?
Because: if US autorities have access to sensitive data of EU people, what or who is making sure that this access is reliably limited to the data of people who are really travelling to the US? -

Both. Also with journalists.
The "EU" or "EC" is often taken as a single entity. But they aren't. There isn't one "they", but there are many political factions involved in the policymaking.
There's another fedi discussion going about representatives within the EC opting for W Social, a proprietary shady social media, and that they should instead put more weight on their presence in the fediverse.
The EC fediverse account is already answering and responding sporadically to people who reply to the announcements they publish on their account. That is very valuable: direct 2-way communication. There is a social media team operating it, who are able to convey opinions from fedizens to policy makers.
Frequently on the EU official website people are asked to do a survey and state their opinion on upcoming policies. When you take the time to fill those out, you never hear back. You never know if you just wasted your time.
Tagging them increases the value of fediverse.

@je5perl
The fact that they want this data is reason enough for concern!
That they want it enough to do deals with it is worrying!
Then add in their latest attack on any thinking they don't like and it's VERY worrying!

++ And vice versa! The Commission argues that "Google" (not the EU) has held a share of over 90% of the €uropeen *search engine market* for many years.According to the Commission, #Google should make ~anonymized~ data available free of charge:
- search queries,
- rankings,
- clicks,
- and views.The Commission <<intends>> for this data to ~help~ comp€titor$ improve their 0wn "search history."
If the data is not free, billions of dollars will be invested in AI regulation.

2/4 This 'Enhanced Border Security Partnership' Framework Agreement would mean an automated exchange of personal data, including highly sensitive information, and access to EU biometric databases to screen and identify travellers.
In short, the US is demanding excessive and unfettered access to information and sensitive personal data of people in the EU, intensifying #surveillance

️A leak of the draft agreeement shows that the Commission is giving into US's demands and risking our rights.
@edri
How to finance universal basic income for every person in the EU ?Give the EU commission a GDPR fine proportional to the severity and amount of data they will give away.
-
4/4 Let's be clear: these excessive demands are nothing less than blackmail from the US. We're calling on EU leaders to fight to protect our fundamental rights against yet another instance of the US bullying the EU into dismantling key safeguards: don't sell our data to the US
@edri IMHO the #EU and it's member statss need to stop bootlicking the #USA and there needs to be a #SaraExportBan & #DataTrafficking - Ban out of the #GDPR!
- Not.to mention this is an unfair regulation and even with a #Visa, people don't get a right to entry into thw #US…

Dear EU,
Do not sign any deals with the Tr
mp administration. They cannot be trusted to carry out their end of any deal (or even understand what they're agreeing to).Let them impose all the sanctions they want, cutting off their own noses to spite their faces. You're better off without them.
Things will change soon, one way or another, and whatever deal you make now will probably not reflect that reality.
Sincerely,
me

What does this mean for people who are not travelling to the US?
Because: if US autorities have access to sensitive data of EU people, what or who is making sure that this access is reliably limited to the data of people who are really travelling to the US?Be aware that the fossil fuel industry plans to route this data via the data centers owned by #PrinceBonesaw in Saudi Arabia and other members of the fascist billionaire club like Koch & Thiel.
Petrostate despots & oil oligarchs are funding the creation of an international state surveillance system with the help of Trump's pay-to-play corrupt regime.
Legislation like this makes the EU a permanent captive oil market, drained dry by high gas prices.
