The US has declared Autistici/Inventati, an Italian anarchist hacker (in the classic sense of the term) collective, a terrorist organization.

Autistici/Inventati's domains have now been revoked. I updated the link in the above post with a wayback machine copy.
Every now and then someone tells me, "We have a decentralized naming system, it's called DNS!" and I say, no we don't, DNS is extremely centralized? And if that wasn't clear to you before, hopefully it's clear to you today.
@cwebber We have a global communications network, many fundamental aspects of which are controlled by the US federal government. There has been concern over this in the past, but past administrations have had the good sense of not throwing the baby out with the bathwater. What we have now is not best described as an administration, but a fascist regime, one which has rapidly moved to use every possible lever to extort other countries into doing what it wants, up to and including unprovoked war.

@cwebber The countries of the world need to fundamentally understand that this will not change as long as Trump lives and the people who surround him are in power and not in prison. The world should treat its entanglements with the US with wartime urgency. The US must be made the dispensable nation. The sovereignty of every nation on the planet that does not understand this is at stake.

@cararemixed "alternative DNS systems" doesn't really help though, because the TLS CA system is designed to work with the centralized view of "DNS truth"
@cwebber Well sure, there's a lot in the stack that is slanted towards central planning and control but it's a little odd painting DNS as necessarily stuck as we use it today. Likewise with certificates and PKI in general. ACME helps a bit as do other forms of trust building. Most of these things have some fixing needed but it's not a gap we can't close.

But what you really ought to read is this article about A/I's history, and what this means https://web.archive.org/web/20260828071449/https://cavallette.noblogs.org/2026/08/10083/2
I'm concerned that the US government is starting to identify decentralized media infrastructure as a threat to its survival. Repost information about this broadly, and if you have media contacts, inform them of counter-narratives; there could come a time where the fediverse, or any decentralized network infrastructure, is a target as well if we don't sound the alarms now.
EDIT: I linked to the wrong page! The second link is now fixed

EDIT 2: A/I's domains have been revoked! So added an archive.org link
Could they post a hosts or zone file to radicle the p2p git forge?

@alienghic @cwebber they could post a list of ip addresses anywhere. but who's going to accept putting up with this? they could also buy other domains, sure, if they find a bank that won't kick them out and they still have funds by then. but eventually you have to pay the servers and interact with either ICANN or RIPE. and even if you stick with local services - how many of them are willing to fight the usa when their own cops come knocking? best to hope it blows over or start hiding on tor

@cwebber
We just had a very interesting season on this at #SoCraTes26 -
@cwebber I'm all for setting up alternate roots and also supporting smarter DNS resolvers like unwind in more places. (I still resolve that domain just fine but it's not clear if it's unwind hitting something with a longer ttl somewhere or a nuance in how it was "revoked")
@cararemixed @cwebber That's not mitigating the centralised nature of how DNS works today, just changing the centre of authority. We need to go full fedi/p2p for name-to-address resolution, and probably (almost certainly) all the other things DNS gets (mis)used for.

@lunareclipse
The Hague ICC judges thing was because VISA and MasterCard are from USA, even if the card is from a European bank. USA can shut them down from European consumers without our banks doing anything.@milja @cwebber @MaddieM4 @lunareclipse UK banks have allegedly started digging themselves out of this hole:

@cwebber "People should be able to communicate without first surrendering themselves to corporations or governments."
Anyone who defies the fascist machinery of surveillance and oppression is an enemy of the Turd Reich.
It's a badge of honor, of sorts.
Everyone who values privacy and civil liberties/freedom should perk their ears and heed this case.
We are all Autistici/Inventati.
Tante grazie, @cavallette

Using an out of band method to share host to IP addresses would work right now.
If the regime learns no one will listen to them, that should discourage them from trying in the future. If not, the part of the world that wants freedom needs to cut the us government and corporations out of their lives.
That's possible though would be an difficult transition period, but if they keep abusing their power they need to lose it

@alienghic but that's what i was talking about earlier. imagine we make our great sovereign euro-icann and euro-root-dns. how long until we also abuse it? how long until our own fascists do the exact same thing? it would be foolish to pretend it's not already been happening. everyone in power wants freedom, freedom to control

@cwebber@social.coop the entire Internet is a US government project. We like to pretend it's not just because countries have "internet exchanges" and there are things called "autonomous zones", and the Internet is fully privatised and everyone acts like nobody has full control over anything but it is not true. The Internet is a US government project to spread US culture and suit their political agenda.

Assuming this is becoming a trend in the western world that's accelerating toward the extreme right. What's the strategy for the technical left? Become more decentralized, teach setting up ad-hoc systems? Become more hidden?@toxomat @cwebber Good questions, I would be interested in ideas and solutions especially ones that I can implement.
At the moment I am trying to create an archive of newspapers which are immutable at least to a much higher degree than websites.
So that trove of information can be referred to in the future.

@cwebber noblogs domain at least seems to still be accessible on my end in Europe. Do we know if this is a US specific block, or perhaps I am just getting a cached DNS response?
(Normally I am in the US but I happen to be in Europe right now)

@navi I wanted to fix this but I don't think there was, or still is, much interest. It would be a lot of work to do something different, at this stage.
