The PHP Foundation wants to publicly share our support for the petition that aims to classify open source contributions as officially recognized volunteer work in Germany. This is a very important distinction for all our open source friends and community members living in Germany, but anyone can sign the petition. It would also be appreciated if you want to spread the word and help us help the organizers reach the 30,000 signatures required to bring it to quorum. 🙏 🐘 🚀

@thephpf What effect does that have? I don't see anything about it on a scan of their webpage.

@thephpf Unfortunately, this (unofficial) petition is not worded effectively and therefore futile. Under German law, individual work cannot be recognized as voluntary work in order to be tax-exempt. Only organizations can be recognized as non-profit, not the individual itself. The law (the so-called 'Abgabenordnung') must be changed so that FOSS becomes a recognized purpose for 'promoting the common good'. Only then can organizations be recognized as charitable and thus tax-exempt.

@LieschenrelleuM @ePirat @thephpf @soatok die Petition richtet sich an den Deutschen Bundestag. Genau deswegen wäre dessen Plattform die einzige richtige Wahl gewesen.
