    I am a little shocked at the lack of solidarity I see between artists working in different mediums wrt genAI.

    Musicians who would never use it to make music use it to make cover art

    Graphic artists reach for it to make music over their videos

    Writers use it to illustrate their articles

    And, considering software development an art, many use it to create web sites or apps to host their art.

    None of this is necessary. All of this is harmful to the other artists.

    Collaborate ffs.

    Stop it.

    @limebar yeah. like, i understand getting good cover art as a musician is rough, i'm kinda in that situation rn (i would be releasing stuff if i had cover art), but stuff being hard is part of making art. i think it's sort of part of a toxic mindset i see in some artists that any challenges they face that aren't "purely" part of their art are just something to be sidestepped or shoved aside

      @limebar

      if someone is using genAI in any way they are automatically not an artist. artists, by definition, make things. typing into a text box is not making anything.

        @limebar I kinda get it? I run free improv shows but have zero artistic / design talent, and definitely no budget (I'm buying stickers and recording equipment out of my own pocket). Getting artwork done free / cheap but also on a schedule is nearly impossible.

        I wish there was a way to trade work or something? But I don't know

          @limebar Commissioning other artists works as long as you got money to spend - or can offer to make something with your art skill that the other person needs. If you have neither money nor energy to create something extra, I guess many tend to fall back on using AI. Personally, I do think that's a reasonable choice, but I wish there were other ways out there to collaborate.

          @marionline @limebar ehh, that's why i taught myself how to use Photoshop and do basic video editing for myself as a poor musician. like, that's kinda how you had to do it before AI. AI feels like a lazy cop out

                @limebar Covers for tracks distributed online are square and about 3000 px square. If someone has images to sell, even non-exclusively, I'd be happy to look at them. But a track on streaming services is likely to earn under $20, how much would you want? I've looked for years to find collaborators to make short videos. There should be a market for reasonable artwork, but music distribs do not allow credit!

                  @limebar I agree about generative AI, and I do not like AI in general. I have experimented with it and I've used it to help clean up some code and do mundane tedious tasks for some synths and programs I've made, as a tool- but even at this I feel oddly icky.

                  I'm glad I experimented with it so I can spot fake stuff easier but I just wish it didn't exist at all honestly.

                  I don't like where it's all headed.

                  Fingers crossed all these companies go bust, that's what it's looking like anyway.

                    everyone classify #salami output as #slop in her/his field of expertise

                    it's beyond me, why somebody assumes it would output meaningful anywhere else.

                        @FediThing @txtechnician @limebar it IS doing things, but at low quality and of questionable legality, dont pretend the #ai threat is all trash, for many who don't care about authenticity or reliability and only want a cheap shot it works. it works especially well for those wanting to manipulate people via social media disinformation

                          @marionline @limebar if you have no money your time is all you have left, and pretty soon #ai wont realistically be "free" for these things much longer. It wont be long before you see adverts or embeded tracking data there

                            @limebar Related (and fixed the link to reference the actual thing I was thinking of.

                            Essentially people are more critical in areas they are experts in and more naive in areas they are not.

                            So a musician might hate AI generated music, but think the AI generated graphics look great, etc.

                            @bit101 @limebar I used to paint, i occasionally have written short works of fiction and im a professional software guy, I absolutely will shun #ai in those areas for sure. My musical ability is non-existent, but if one of my games gets good enough to need a music score I will 100% make sure I find a real musician for it and pay them, I promise!

                              @brent_bartlett @iagox86 @limebar

                              they used stock art + Photoshop (or a free photo editor like Gimp or Paint or a cheap Photoshop clone like Affinity)

                              stock photos & illustrations from Deposit Photos ran me about 38 cents an image so even if I bought multiple images to "photobash" a unique cover then the cost was super low

                              admittedly i had some training in visual art but this stuff ain't rocket science, it just takes the willingness to experiment & train your eye as to what looks good / commercial in a cover image
