    I've only just realised that the pencil they give you as your 'admission ticket' at the Pencil Museum in Keswick is a special pencil!

    I'm wondering if a museum purely devoted to pencils might be one of the most Mastodon places in England?
    Maybe it's one of Mastodon's Spiritual Homes!

      @MikeFromLFE How has no one told me there is a pencil museum? I feel deeply deprived. All the more so after finding this in their museum shop (yes, not having the museum on hand will not keep me from museum shops). https://www.derwentart.com/en-gb/p/2302303/gifts-offers/gift-ideas/ww2-secret-map-souvenir-pencil

      @camilla_hoel At the museum there's a detailed video of how the factory went about producing the original secret agent pencils. It wasn't easy, particularly because of the secrecy involved in manufacturing the components!

        @naturepoker
        They also give you a quiz based on the exhibits - get them all right and you get a pen as well (it's a normal artist fine liner pen, not specifically branded though!)

        @MikeFromLFE @naturepoker I feel cheated - we just got another pencil (different type though) for completing the quiz.

            @MikeFromLFE

            I lived in Keswick for 4 years and somehow missed out on the Pencil Museum. I have been down a local lead mine though.

                @camilla_hoel @MikeFromLFE we definitely had a discussion about it a couple of years ago when I was asking why the lake district got graphite instead of diamonds.

                  @MikeFromLFE Little known fact, The 2B was used by Shakespeare himself, although he was a little unsure about it.

                    @MikeFromLFE I've been there! I think maybe three times.

                      @ianturton @camilla_hoel Apparently, early on, soon after the discovery of graphite up there, graphite was more valuable than gold.
