As far as #Proton is concerned, you can ignore the backtracking.

@lauren I have time left on my subscription but cancelled the renewal. If the board can’t oust Yen then I’m out

I have lost faith in all software companies. They have turned into AI labs and are willing to sell out to the most corrupt bidder.
During the late 90s and early 00's I wouldn't have imagined that we would eventually lose one of the most democratizing platforms invented.

@bsdtv @DianeBruce @mwl I do NOT recommend people run their own mail servers in 2026. The hassles are just not worth it, too much email will never get through without enormous work and even then important emails are almost certain to be lost. I wouldn't do it today if I hadn't been running servers for decades, and every day it seems to get harder. Trust me on this.

@lauren any suggestions on alternatives? I believed in Proton 🫠

@lauren @bsdtv @DianeBruce @mwl at this point I think that at best it’s tolerable to run a mail server for a coop or other not-too-small group of people but I can’t imagine it being worth it for less than maybe 20 people.

@lauren @bsdtv @DianeBruce @mwl I, too, have run a (small) mail server for decades. I actually think it's *easier* for me, because my IP and Domain are old and have been building "reputation" for decades.
For someone running a one-person server (as I am), I don't think it's too hard to get deliverability working. But if you want to send lots of email, or host many domains, it gets much harder to avoid being seen as spam.

@agreeable_landfall @bsdtv @DianeBruce @mwl Well, keeping in mind that my main domain was one of the first 40 dot-coms issued, I probably have it over you in terms of domain age. But the amount of inbound spam is enormous, beyond imagination. Even with greylisting and spamassassin, a lot gets through, and they are serious pains to maintain. Tighten things up too much and non-spam will be blocked (even if you don't tighten up non-spam ends up often blocked) and typically vanish into a black hole. Equally bad is that the major mail services have been blocking more and more non-spam email and/or tossing into user spam folders that are never reviewed by users, and without SPF, DKIM, and DMARC everyone will eventually be blocked. They're doable but also a hassle to maintain. Also, there are so many blocklists now that will add IPs to their blocklists on the basis of one inaccurate report, and getting off them can be almost impossible sometimes unless you "know someone" who can help directly. Again, I most strongly recommend NOT going in this direction. It's bad now and will only be getting worse.

Ditto. I host mail for 8 domains. Most of those predate the existence of google. One of the predates the existence of AOL and Altavista. I only get spam treatment if I attach videos. Which is right and just. I only send videos on request. -

@akilazone @lauren if you only need email and calendar (and soon drive) I guess Tuta, but no company has a spotless track record and Tuta doesn’t either. If you need passwords… Bitwarden? Not actually sure.

@lauren Astermail seems to be promising (they seem to mainly use AI for finding bugs and security issues). They're currently going through an audit, so awaiting that to see what the results are.

@lauren do you have any decent mail hosting services you could recommend? I have used Fastmail and had good results.
@DianeBruce has had a domain for a long time and the @mwl book is a good reference even if you don't host your own.

Seems the influence of the email empire reaches far these days. Sorry to disappoint but you have been woefully misinformed.
