    Maybe there isn't A Tipping Point, but several. Like milestones on the long road to freedom. I've just reached one.

    @CiaraNi love, love, love “I shall wear my spelling mistakes and my garbled syntax with pride”! 🥰
    BTW, this is what university teachers who grade papers in English are telling me now: when they come across a paper with spelling mistakes they think “bless your heart, you did this yourself ♥️”

      You mean well, I know, all of you who read what I wrote, but are now telling me to install Linux anyway. Please just let me have this today, friends. Please don't make me tap the sign.

      @CiaraNi I really do want to move away from predatory tech, too, but I know it would take me forever. However, I have bookmarked this wonderfully generous step-by-step guide by Janet Vertesi on how to “Take back your digital footprint” (not exactly the same issue, I think, but I am expecting the outcome to be pretty much the same):

        @tanyakaroli @CiaraNi
        Well done!
        Also: They built a rock solid spell checker into Mastodon - It’s the POST button. Press it, and you’ll see your mistakes instantly, when your Toot gets faved.
        Works for me every time!

          @tanyakaroli @CiaraNi I too love the idea of being proudly human and letting it show in your writing style.

          I do worry about picking some sign to distinguish human writing from AI "writing", though, whether it's spelling mistakes or something like the use of em-dashes. Not just because AI can all too easily be adapted to include spelling mistakes, or to not use em dashes, but also because I've always liked to put effort into my writing, and some people are just naturally good at spelling, too.

            @stveje Agreed! We need to be wary of false positives. This is one of the reasons most universities have allowed the use of genAI, despite the many risks it poses. We simply cannot prove or disprove claims of using or not using this technology. Given that rule, I see little reason for students to want to insert intentional spelling mistakes in their writing. Not yet, at least. Maybe when the pendulum has swung sufficiently in the opposite direction for human-ness to be appreciated above superficial flawlessness. @CiaraNi

              @tanyakaroli @CiaraNi Even then, what would be the point of intentionally changing your writing to sound "more human" or "not AI" if the AI can just mimic that, too?

              I feel like the right response is to simply continue to write the way you do, to just be yourself and try not to worry if someone thinks it was written by AI.

                @stveje yes - my point is that that will hopefully be easier for our students when they know they won’t be accused of cheating. @CiaraNi

                        I was cross when I stomped off on Copilot and into the arms of the first open-source software I met. I had no plan, just a need to do something, anything. Turns out the no-plan plan suits me. To not get overwhelmed, I decided not to stress about a big move. I'd just take gradual steps. To my happy surprise, these steps feel less like exercise and more like dancing. I'm especially enjoying the transfer to Tuta mail, getting rid of unwanted mail ties. Like weeding the garden on a slow sunny day.

                          @CiaraNi what a nice metaphor! I’ll keep that in mind for when I find the time and energy to start my own process of disentangling myself from big tech.
