Every time a newcomer posts an introduction and somebody tells them they shouldn’t have joined Mastodon.social and need to move to a different server, an angel loses their wings.
-
Ditto:
'Why are you still on Bluesky too?'
'But did you *delete* your Twitter account?'
’You said you switched to Proton mail too, oh that’s bad, once someone at Proton said something’
It’s nice to see new neighbours move into the Fediverse. It feels unwelcoming to see people immediately interview them about the purity of their intentions. Or telling them You’re Doing It Wrong. They've just arrived on a journey away from Big Tech. Maybe they'd prefer to be offered a seat and a cup of tea.
@CiaraNi Bring back the pineapples!

@CiaraNi *reads every comment*
"Yeah, but people really shouldn't join mastodon.social"

@Wifiwits @DavidBridger This has happily reminded me of one of the happiest moments of my life, the moment when I learnt that the Scone of Stone in the Discworld is based on an actual real Stone of Scone in Scotland.
@CiaraNi @Wifiwits @DavidBridger I remember when It showed up in Thud (I think) and I was so glad I understood the reference, thanks purely to an episode of #HighlanderTheSeries
-
@imalcolm The 'anti-welcome committee' - that is what it feels like. They could just ignore and scroll by, but apparently feel the need to stand on the new neighbour's doorstep telling them to move. Am sorry you had that experience. Am glad you stayed.
They could, but zealotry makes some possibly well-meaning people behave like jerks, I guess!
And thanks so much for that - I'm glad I stayed as well, it feels like I have found more of "my people" here over time, and the conversations and connections I have here tend to be more genuine, for want of a better word.
-
@psneeze That someone would be me, if they pronounced it Skon, not scone-rhymes-with-Eoghan

@CiaraNi Mastodon is extra boring, could never be my only social anyway, I just want to unwind and without an algorithm I had to block A LOT of people and curate my home A LOT to not always read some people laments, weird pub-like political takes, or someone just being petty for no reason. This is also why mastodon can't truly take off, no algorithm + boring posts = too much work to put into getting a good experience.
And don't get me started on moderation. Had some crazy racist episode on me about some canadian or us bunch of guys machine translating an italian saying and telling me I violated their rules, banning me without even giving me a warning.
Crazy site. Would never have it as my only social lol -
@CarstenBoll As long as they're giving out to me in a Scottish accent, they're welcome to be cross with me. I will listen happily to anything if it's said in Officially The Best Accent In The World

@imalcolm 'the conversations and connections I have here tend to be more genuine, for want of a better word' - that reflects my experience here too

@CiaraNi
"Officially The Best Accent In The World"I would agree with that.
-
@CarstenBoll Oh yes, a nice bit of Scouse, always lovely to hear too

The fact that the thread under this Serious Toot has ascended into a pleasant war about the correct way to pronounce Scone is why I love the Fediverse
@CiaraNi The pronounciation is a matter of geography. The more interesting question is: Do you put the clotted cream on first, or do you put it on top of the jam?

I really, really, hate this, and to be honest telling people they need to get off mastodon.social is a big red flag for me.

@wsrphoto @CiaraNi @bleistifterin @rgarner
There's only one way to drink coffee - black!@Sarahw @CiaraNi @bleistifterin @rgarner True. Black, no sugar except maybe a little for the last cup in the pot or the espresso you made too strong to help the taste buds swallow the bitterness.
-
@bleistifterin @m3t00 @rgarner @CiaraNi @Sarahw I make cold brew from Peets Big Bang. It's the one that passed taste tests of about a dozen coffee. A barista at Starbucks told me their recipe for sweet vanilla cream for their cold brew. It's 4 ingredients found in grocery stores. The taste depends on the vanilla syrup you use.

@CiaraNi I recently went into a cafe and had a brief internal battle over whether I wanted to sound like a colonialist or a culchie. Regrettably my mouth decided not to commit either way and it asked for a skun.
