    Ditto:

    'Why are you still on Bluesky too?'

    'But did you *delete* your Twitter account?'

    ’You said you switched to Proton mail too, oh that’s bad, once someone at Proton said something’

    It’s nice to see new neighbours move into the Fediverse. It feels unwelcoming to see people immediately interview them about the purity of their intentions. Or telling them You’re Doing It Wrong. They've just arrived on a journey away from Big Tech. Maybe they'd prefer to be offered a seat and a cup of tea.

    @CiaraNi I pronounce it 'skon' because I like them so much that I always put 2 or 3 in my mouth at the same time, so I can't open it wide enough to enunciate the long vowel in 'scone'. 😃

      @HunterZ @CiaraNi Yeah, I can see that.
      I know when a lot of Australian twitter refugees I know landed onto the local instances there was heavy gatekeeping going on.
      Most of them left very quickly.

        @johnlorimer @CiaraNi

        Alternative supplementary explanation; certain instance owners don't like that there's such a large instance that doesn't enforce their particular sensibilities and preferences when it comes to what people can talk about.

        It's problematic for those admins/mods because mastodon.social has so many users that blocking it is more like punishing yourself, rather than punishing all the people on mastodon.social. It's a power thing as much as it is about spam (which does exist)

        @contrasocial @CiaraNi Thank you. I am feeling a little brave, so am thinking of running a very small instance.
        I've had the domain "adayinthe.com" for many years, and it almost seems perfect for an instance domain.

                  @Wifiwits @DavidBridger This has happily reminded me of one of the happiest moments of my life, the moment when I learnt that the Scone of Stone in the Discworld is based on an actual real Stone of Scone in Scotland.

                    @imalcolm The 'anti-welcome committee' - that is what it feels like. They could just ignore and scroll by, but apparently feel the need to stand on the new neighbour's doorstep telling them to move. Am sorry you had that experience. Am glad you stayed.

                    And thanks so much for that - I'm glad I stayed as well, it feels like I have found more of "my people" here over time, and the conversations and connections I have here tend to be more genuine, for want of a better word. 😊

                      This seems like a trap like pronouncing worcester sauce or the name Maria that suddenly has the letter "R" in the end when people from "one of these Islands" over there say it out loud...

                        @sibylle Pronunciation may vary slightly depending on regional accent and whether you're praising or scolding Eoghan, but Eoghan rhymes with Lone and Loan and Owen and Joan and Cone and Scone.

                          @CiaraNi Mastodon is extra boring, could never be my only social anyway, I just want to unwind and without an algorithm I had to block A LOT of people and curate my home A LOT to not always read some people laments, weird pub-like political takes, or someone just being petty for no reason. This is also why mastodon can't truly take off, no algorithm + boring posts = too much work to put into getting a good experience.

                          And don't get me started on moderation. Had some crazy racist episode on me about some canadian or us bunch of guys machine translating an italian saying and telling me I violated their rules, banning me without even giving me a warning.
                          Crazy site. Would never have it as my only social lol

                                    @CiaraNi The pronounciation is a matter of geography. The more interesting question is: Do you put the clotted cream on first, or do you put it on top of the jam?

                                      Every time a newcomer posts an introduction and somebody tells them they shouldn’t have joined Mastodon.social and need to move to a different server, an angel loses their wings.

                                      @CiaraNi

                                      I really, really, hate this, and to be honest telling people they need to get off mastodon.social is a big red flag for me.

                                        There's only one way to drink coffee - black!

                                        @Sarahw @CiaraNi @bleistifterin @rgarner True. Black, no sugar except maybe a little for the last cup in the pot or the espresso you made too strong to help the taste buds swallow the bitterness.

                                          @m3t00 @rgarner @CiaraNi @wsrphoto @Sarahw just out of interest: do you drink cold brew cold?
                                          How do you heat it up?

                                          @bleistifterin @m3t00 @rgarner @CiaraNi @Sarahw I make cold brew from Peets Big Bang. It's the one that passed taste tests of about a dozen coffee. A barista at Starbucks told me their recipe for sweet vanilla cream for their cold brew. It's 4 ingredients found in grocery stores. The taste depends on the vanilla syrup you use.
