@hipsterelectron @madengineering @aeva Are you sure about that in the post-DOGE era?

@be @hipsterelectron @aeva Banks knowing how much money you've deposited, and thus how much you can demand back from them, is serious business for banks.
Wouldn't want me to withdraw a million dollars that I don't actually have now, would you?

@hipsterelectron @be @aeva The government has plans ready to collect taxes in the apocalypse, so yeah, they are ready to operate on paper, with candles, writing with goose quills if need be. The world literally ending would not stop them.

@be @madengineering @aeva this stuff is vital to the functioning of a state. it would harm the state more than anything else to lose it. records were largely not lost to musk but leaked to private individuals who shouldn't have had access

@hipsterelectron @madengineering @aeva the numbers in health insurance land are all totally fake anyway. If you ask a doctor how much something would cost, they can't answer because they legit don't know and don't even know how to find out.

@hipsterelectron @be @aeva The physical manifestation of a corporation is a piece of paper, and if you were to get your hands on it, yeah, you could break a corporation in half with almost no effort at all. Fighting the lawyer guarding it would be kind of tricky, though.

@madengineering @aeva It requires a concerted effort of an army of hackers/social-engineers to slowly overthrow the banking infrastructure over the course of decades. I, of course, have nothing to do with any such plan, and it... is... completely... fictional

Hi, backend dev for SEC-compliant enterprise NAT here.

Basically because the record keeping laws in place to guard against financial fraud in major institutions also mandate a level of data redundancy and immutability that incidentally guards against such tampering to a level that approaches the US military. Every file creation, update, delete is revision controlled.

Imagine a fictional financial institution, let's call them Jigglypuff's Professional Money Cabal. First, they don't even have root-user access on their own storage. They can't override the legally mandated retention policy -- even in the off-site backup systems -- without a kernel patch that can't be installed unless it's signed with their storage manufacturer's private key. And at the first sign of compromise, the Cabal runbook is to just immediately flatten the whole thing, reinstall a clean system, and restore from the nearest geo.

Even if you go full Fight Club and physically destroy the buildings, in multiple cities, they've got another fully redundant and air gapped disaster recovery storage system literally in a bunker underneath a Colorado mountain.
