how come hackers never do anything cool like erase debt or steal from the ultra wealthy or completely obliterate the credit reporting agencies

@madengineering @hipsterelectron @aeva someone should uh, lose those records in the Department of Education
@madengineering @hipsterelectron @aeva Something tells me health insurance companies aren't as serious about having their records in order.
-
@hipsterelectron @madengineering @aeva yeah that's why I wouldn't be surprised if DOGE conveniently lost those paper records for Elon Musk
@be @madengineering @aeva this stuff is vital to the functioning of a state. it would harm the state more than anything else to lose it. records were largely not lost to musk but leaked to private individuals who shouldn't have had access

@be @madengineering @aeva i think corps are far more vulnerable than the state. corps die all the time

@hipsterelectron @madengineering @aeva the numbers in health insurance land are all totally fake anyway. If you ask a doctor how much something would cost, they can't answer because they legit don't know and don't even know how to find out.

@hipsterelectron @be @aeva The physical manifestation of a corporation is a piece of paper, and if you were to get your hands on it, yeah, you could break a corporation in half with almost no effort at all. Fighting the lawyer guarding it would be kind of tricky, though.

@madengineering @be @aeva i have defeated harvard legal scholars before and i could lay waste to a revolving-door corporate scumbag

@hipsterelectron @be @aeva Sounds like there will be a big ink bath on our hands then.

@aeva ben kingsley tried but robert redford stopped him

@madengineering @aeva It requires a concerted effort of an army of hackers/social-engineers to slowly overthrow the banking infrastructure over the course of decades. I, of course, have nothing to do with any such plan, and it... is... completely... fictional

@cyberquixote @howtophil @aeva If anyone asks, the exploded hardware in my house was me trying to test my antilogic computer out in a cave, it failed, and I'm just trying to clean up properly and not pollute the environment, please don't tell the insurance company.

Hi, backend dev for SEC-compliant enterprise NAT here.Basically because the record keeping laws in place to guard against financial fraud in major institutions also mandate a level of data redundancy and immutability that incidentally guards against such tampering to a level that approaches the US military. Every file creation, update, delete is revision controlled.
Imagine a fictional financial institution, let's call them Jigglypuff's Professional Money Cabal. First, they don't even have root-user access on their own storage. They can't override the legally mandated retention policy -- even in the off-site backup systems -- without a kernel patch that can't be installed unless it's signed with their storage manufacturer's private key. And at the first sign of compromise, the Cabal runbook is to just immediately flatten the whole thing, reinstall a clean system, and restore from the nearest geo.
Even if you go full Fight Club and physically destroy the buildings, in multiple cities, they've got another fully redundant and air gapped disaster recovery storage system literally in a bunker underneath a Colorado mountain.

@aeva I think it's because a choice between cashing bug bounties vs. someone putting a bounty on your head, sadly

man, there's nothing sadder than people going to bat for the criminals who know in their hearts that better things aren't possible and just set their aim at the little people instead

@aeva everyone in your replies is talking about the IRS and stuff having crazy security which is fair. but that's different from History's Most Engorged Startups
-
@aeva So, trying to hack banks to delete all evidence of every debt would be cool, but, it's kind of a self-sacrifice option and you probably only get one shot at it.

@aeva who do you think bankrolled their infra lol
-
@aeva i'm actually not bc unlike batman my code is "don't work on evil shit" and it's hard to work on hacking into things without losing your soul i think systems of protection are very important to build but some day we will have to go on the attack and i will have my spell slots ready to play healer
@hipsterelectron @aeva You can, but you have to make sure your work are done based on sheer amount of will, and spite
