Japan declared that teaching children about hell or using fear-based religious lessons is officially classified as a form of psychological abuse against minors... BECAUSE IT FUCKING IS! Saying so doesn't undermine religious freedom, but if you can't supposedly practice your religion freely without terrorising a child in the process, then perhaps you don't deserve to practice it altogether!

@weekendspy Yes, that's true.

@weekendspy does anyone have the sauce? I can only find stuff from 2022.

@janvenetor @Netzblockierer @weekendspy If religion was really a need... how do we atheist exist? The ones that were raised with no religion at all. The ones that are mentally healthy and strong.
@delawen @janvenetor @Netzblockierer @weekendspy Hi, I'm an atheist. And while I, on balance, believe the world would be a better place if secularism won, I recognize that religion is still important to a lot of people. Moreover, it doesn't make all of them bad people.
I sang in an Episcopal choir for several years. I was a cantor, I was a lector, despite being an atheist. Why? I found the experience to be beautiful: the music, the text, the building, the friends, and the message of love.

@delawen @janvenetor @Netzblockierer @weekendspy My Episcopalian friends were lovely. I don't believe in Christ, but they lived out his values way better than other Christians I've met. They taught me that you can have faith AND be a good person.
I have no choice but to respect other people's beliefs, as long as they're not hurting anyone. Even if they aren't my beliefs.
Scaring kids with hell is not okay, though. To be clear.

when i was in grammar school, a classmate was a southern baptist. he was frequently in tears because all of his friends were not southern baptist, so they were all going to burn in hell for eternity.
anyone who does that to kids doesn't get to call themselves a good or moral person.
@paul_ipv6 @weekendspy
I had 2 classmates from the Jehovah witness cult.
Simply horrible what they went through.
Always tried to include them when by tradition on birthdays in Dutch schools you hand out treats. They were not allowed to have some, so i made an excuse that i need help to prep the baskets etc and asked them in the teachers lounge so they could have some to without anyone knowing it.
It's been 50 years since then and i still think of them once in a while what they've been through. -

@weekendspy There are zero virtues from religion that can't exist without it but there are many harms exclusive to it.
It's absolutely insane how we allow people to exercise their right to freedom of religion in a way which takes that same exact right away from others.

Where do I say religious people are bad people?
I just mentioned the fact that religion is not a human need.
Don't put words on my keyboard I haven't typed.

@delawen @Netzblockierer @weekendspy I'm a positive atheist.
Forbidding piano music would stump humanity. Not all people like music. Banning dropping pianos on people would be proportional.
@janvenetor @Netzblockierer @weekendspy even in your metaphor: it is a "like", not a need.
A convenience.
A hobby.
A guidance.
A consolation.
Not a human need.

@aletzi @manes @weekendspy basically the same: "Inciting fear by telling children they will go to hell if they don’t participate in religious activities, or preventing them from making decisions about their career path, is regarded as psychological abuse and neglect in the guidelines."

@aletzi @manes @weekendspy it sounds like the claim, however, only plans for it. Still, remarkable.

Seems like an update, ideally per [[WP:RS]], is needed: "In December 2022, Japanese Ministry of Health, Labor, and Welfare **considered drafting** new guidelines ..." [1] (**emphasis** added)

@delawen @Netzblockierer @weekendspy that's my motto: people have to have hobbies.
People crave deeply to believe objectively untrue things. A purpose, a meaning. Being part of a plan and a greater whole. An agent of compassion and mercy and salvation. A validating peer group and a party.
It's a rich part of human experience and not usually harmful.
For me it's only a problem when children's fingers bleed. Or when they push up these fraudulent dipshits like Hegseth.
(Decriminalize drugs too)

@Netzblockierer @weekendspy I believe religion is a deep need in humans and forbidding all aspects of it is cruel beyond measure.
Then again I was taught that gay people go to hell, which is not an easy lesson to live with as a horny kid.
There are no religious exemptions for e.g. human sacrifice. Certain practices can be banned as inhuman...
@janvenetor @Netzblockierer @weekendspy
I think there is a need for comfort and guidance that we have as kids, and those that are raised in religious households/communities grow up believing their religion is the source for that. Even those that find religion in later life, I believe, are looking for comfort and guidance that they have not found elsewhere in life.
So I disagree that religion is what people have a deep need for. They just find what they need there. And that perpetuates the myth.

@janvenetor @delawen @Netzblockierer @weekendspy I think a lot of atheists have some kind of humanist/moral framework and world view that is not religious but meets some of the same needs (however defined) that religion does for other people.
Then you have the official atheists/anti-theists like Richard Dawkins who either end up reinventing religion or otherwise go down the pan like with Dawkins' super-intelligent conscious robot girlfriend.
