    Ok #HomeLab'ers and #HomeAssistant'ers or #Android experts.

    I recently connected my HA app to my #HomeLab and now there's a tiny blue dot at the very top right of my mobile screen. It comes and goes quite frequently and makes me feel watched.

    WTF is it?

    I guess it's too do with notifications but what does it mean and what evil have I exposed myself to now?

      @happyborg it's a visual marker in Android to let you know something is accessing the microphone or camera. If it worries you, you can tweak the permissions for the app. I guess it's listening for wake words

        @happyborg

        The blue dot indicates that something is using your location.

        The Home Assistant Companion app will use your location to determine if you're home (i.e. on the same network as the Home Assistant server), among other things.

        See "6. Location permission" in the docs:

        https://companion.home-assistant.io/docs/getting_started/

          @vague well bloody hell, I was right! So now to find how I've enabled that. Is there a name for the thing?

          Could it be that it's checking location? I allowed that in the HA app, but I don't know if I can stand the blinking dot all the time.

          Thanks!

            @mjack do you know what the dot is called? I'd like to know if I can turn it off without disabling HA permissions - ideally just for HA.

            Thanks!

              @mjack Hmm, looks like they thought of everything except "stop showing the bloody dot fire this app".

              If it didn't keep turning on and if I would be able to ignore it but blinking all the time is just awful.
