Authenticity Problem

@mirabilos @kagan @davidrevoy the whole thing with AI is that it copies what it has ingested, the reason it uses em-dashes in the way it does is.. because people use em-dashes like that
it doesn't come up with actually unique typing quirks by itself
@davidrevoy @sinewave @kagan it has to do with tokenisation, so inconsistences can come from that; the slop extruder doesnât copy verbatim, it lossily uncompresses from its corpus
-
@kagan @davidrevoy @sinewave look, if you go through the hoops to insert an em dash but use ASCII quotation marks, youâre at the very least suspect, even if just hypocrite or inconsistent.
Itâs a sign of suspiction, not a metric. A sign to look closer.
@mirabilos @kagan @davidrevoy an em-dash is literally just shift+altgr+m, it's not exactly jumping through hoops
meanwhile i for example have no idea how to type quotation marks other than the ASCII ones, and in fact prefer those anyway

@kagan @davidrevoy @sinewave em dash is Ctrl-P+u+2+0+1+4 or Compose+-+-+space, typographic quotation marks can be vastly easier (e.g. L3-F8)

@mirabilos @kagan @davidrevoy this nitpicking is besides the point anyway, the point is that there are no actually accurate metrics, and you do more harm than good by trying to witch-hunt the slopsters
they won't care; the people you catch in the crossfire will
and it's better to let a few slopsters exist than it is to harass artists and authors off the internet by accusing them of AI use

@nate @davidrevoy
this message is AI-generated, isn't it?

@davidrevoy that reminds me of a story you told us recentlyâŠ

@davidrevoy I faced this while doing a research paper for publishing, there were many parts that I wrote them myself, but it's was flagged as AI percentage. No matter what I change those paragraphs, it still gives me that an AI wrote it. I eventually inserted some typing mistakes intentionally to escape this loop.

@miawinter Oh no. Sorry! đ«

@davidrevoy it just hurts seeing this happen all the time
can't wait for the world to get better again

-
@mirabilos Nawww, mate. I learned about the ctrl+shift+alt+U trick that lets me insert nice pretty em-dashes into a text, so I don't have to look amateur with double-dashes, but I ain't gonna do that for every punctuation mark. I'm not that anal.

@davidrevoy This is one of the things about AI generated art that many people don't think about... it's that *psychologically* speaking, regardless of whether we use AI or not, we're all now in a state of constantly questioning whether something is authentic or not.
This is an incredibly erosive precedent to be set for human culture. We live in truly dangerous times.
-
@kagan @sinewave @davidrevoy please read what I wrote, not what you think I might have written.
When someone uses em dashes with regular ASCII spaces, and ASCII single and double quotes instead of typographic apostrophes and quotation marks, then theyâre very suspect.
I am one of those who care a bit about typography.
@mirabilos @davidrevoy I've got to go meet up with some out-of-town friends and haven't got time for this. I'm sorry you think I'm suspect and hypocritical. But @sinewave, thank you for pointing out ways is which it can be easier to do em dashes than all the different variations on curly quotes (single and double, left and right).

Oh damn! I owe you a sincere apology.
I'm used to avoid AI slop, and my reaction to the image 1 was âAI genâ. I even closed the image, and then saw the title âAuthenticity Problem,â it made me doubt myself. I reopened the image, read the comic, and then watched the timelapse, which confirmed that it was indeed your work and not AI.
And now I canât even imagine what it must be like for you. Hang in there, and great work despite everything!
And again, sorry! Apparently, I'm biased

@FogRyu Hey, thank you for the feedback, and for doing the extra effort of double checking

On the contrary. Thanks to you! It made me wonder how many images Iâve quickly closed just because they were âAI,â when they actually werenât...
And on top of that, it seems youâre a FOSS advocate and a Krita user (and maybe Blender, if I understand correctly).
So clearly, I would have missed out on an opportunity, especially since Iâm trying again to get into Krita, among other foss.
Et aparemment vous ĂȘtes français en plus. Haha.

@murdoc@autistics.life @davidrevoy@framapiaf.org Iâm wary of recommending even the uses in the article (Iâd would be inclined to say none).
Even people that do know how they work seem vulnerable to LLM psychosis over long enough exposure.
And for programming in particular, the ways in which they fail are so unintuitive that they end-up requiring far more (tedious, morale-destroying) effort in review than just writing it from scratch (and then having that reviewed).
The ethics & environmental costs are mentioned in there though. But I do need to highlight, ethical problems abound.
@lispi314
Thanks for the feedback. If you know of any good literature or research on LLM psychosis, I'd like to take a look. The Techne program is designed to improve through feedback and contributions like that. -

@FogRyu Oui, de Montauban

@kagan @mirabilos @davidrevoy on that note i did look up how to do the curly quotes btw, they're apparently shift+altgr+2 and 5 on nordic boards
