I think the same thing about DuckDuckGo — it is American.
Startpage is owned and operated by Surfboard Holding BV, which is majority-owned by System1, an American internet advertising company. It is headquartered in California, USA.
Someone who doesn't know better would argue that Startpage's offices are in the Netherlands, but ownership matters, and you cannot just pretend it doesn't.
@Zelda @davidrevoy That’s the big problem for me - it’s a full time job tracking down who ultimately owns anything of these services. And as soon as I find one that seems to be okay, someone else buys it.

I think the user @Linux is the person who published this list, and that was their goal, trying to find businesses that were truly not owned by Americans. That has to be a daunting task, and I appreciate that someone went through the trouble.

@simondev Nice. Thanks for the link. I had the classic DDG with AI turned off (+ublock origin and a AI blocklist), I'll check if this variant is better.
@davidrevoy @simondev Oh! If you haven't already, you should add uBlacklist. If you have an AI blocklist, uBlock Origin will stop you from being able to click the links, but uBlacklist will stop them from showing up in the search results at all.

Well they tuned it that it was unusable long before they started experimenting with AI on Google.comLet's be honest, bad search results came from honest enshitifing impulses that drove the business into the direction completely by itself.
Why offer the best results for free if the content providers can be forced to pay for the best slots via AdWords?
It's organic.
Google doesn't need ads to ruin its search.
@yacc143 I agree! I remember exactly during a coding sprint with the Krita team back in 2018 having this discussion around the table and each one sharing what they used because it started to be impossible to just find quickly issues, debug info, things in various documentation, etc...
But the AI era really made everything go faster downhill. I'm convinced by that.

@ToonLink hey! In my first sketch, I designed big arms on the top of the machine (to pick books around) but it felt complex and also it had something a bit agressive or dangerous.
I then decided it was a sort of teleportation thing, yep. That's one advantage of having a setup in a magic university
