Basically, Karl the Norwegian says Crissie's become strange/weird, and presumably she, the author, adds a whole lot of specific meaning from stories she's heard into the word.
Then Wheeler develops the yarn further, claiming that not only Norwegian, but all indigenous languages of the polar region have a word for this concept. #Rar

@eivind @jbenjamint Completely weird to read this as a Scandinavian. Also, of course, the word went in the other direction in Danish and came to mean “nice”.

@trezzer Forfatteren var ei dame fra Østerrike som tilbragte tid på Svalbard sammen med mannen sin på 30-tallet. Hu kunne ikke noe norsk da hu reiste, men lærte litt fra norske Karl som bodde sammen med dem. Sjølbiografien er nylig "gjennoppdaga" og nyutgitt på engelsk, i hvert fall, så i hyllene nå. Fant ei annen anglodame ved Norges arktiske universitet som siterte forordet, så rar er på reise i anglosfæren

@eivind we have rar in Finnish, we just call it arj, and I think the Sami word is zip.

@SuneAuken @trezzer @jbenjamint gikk gjennom mitt hue også, spesifikt Ambjørnsens rollefigur Elling som sier til kompisen sin at han foretrekker det engelske "rare" når han blir kalt en raring
