Yes, having custom emojis for your server/community is very important. The admins of @mastodonie - an Irish instance - added icons for a pint of stout, Tayto crisps (the national potato chip), Brennan's bread (an indispensable loaf), and (most important of all) a mug of tea.

I can only really see those icons, if I'm on that Irish instance? Or if my instance supports those? Wondering if it's worth going down the rabbit hole of figuring out how to make these / use these for our official EU Commission instance... -

You should be able to access two sets of emojis - the Mastodon Emojos and the usual system specifics (Apple in my case) emojis. Apple emoji:

@kallekn @hpod16 @HennaVirkkunen This is exactly why I have been pushing the #LoseTheXLink hashtag. I see a lot of nobodies like myself leaving Twitter ... sorry ... X ... and that is great, but many people stay on that platform because they are following "big" accounts that stay there. Getting "big" accounts with lots of followers to quit is the way to make this snowball into a REAL #Xodus . How to get them to do so? Bombard them with questions asking them how they can justify staying there.

My Mastodon instance emojo: @hpod16 @clickhere @Trojaner @mastodonie The emojo entered as colon name colon is visible in text format until you publish your message whereas the Apple emoji is visible immediately.

@hpod16 the instance was born in October 2025. I wanted to create an "ethical" digital platform for Catholic Communities, priests and Catholic educators. We are small at the moment, but with God's help, we will grow.

If they are not installed on the local server, you can only see the code.

As for your mission, It's my belief that explaining exactly what ActivityPub (and not just Mastodon) actually would be a great first step. ActivityPub is the protocol that every Fediverse service uses to dialogue with other services.
I also believe that @_elena and her (I hope this is the right pronoun Elena, if not just make me know and I'll edit) videos explaining the Fediverse would help a lot

The EU institutions should have own instances
and „all“ of the Parliament an account. -

We didn't have enough Mastodon experts on the team (we do have some) so I decided to join Mastodon myself to learn more about what works here, etc.
I went for eupolicy.social after a brief search, looks like it was made for people in the EU bubble, which I very much am.
(despite the fact that I have purple hair and interesting hobbies) -

Is there any appetite (& budget?) in your group to do some user experience work to find out what barriers non-technical users have (or perceive) about coming to the Fediverse?
My personal take is that decentralization is not necessarily, in & of itself, a positive feature. Mostly people just want to talk to their friends & other interesting people they've met. The details of how that's achieved are less important to them

@hpod16 And there is no doubt that decentralization causes additional complexities for certain aspects of the Fedi, such as moderation (which is a huge one).
