    I found an amazon basics color changing smart light bulb attached to a lamp my neighbor threw in the apartment dumpster.

    Apparently you can only change the color by giving the bulb access to your wifi network and using the alexa app on your phone. Very stupid.

              @MLE_online a lot of times you can initially hook these things up to scamazon or wiz or whatever and then switch them over to homeassistant, ditching the original service tether.

              the wifi shenanigans are why all my "smart" bulbs are zigbee based. i have a usb zigbee radio dingus hanging out the side of my server. small price to pay for avoiding the software requirement.
