Yeah I saw that - kinda like Flock You.
-
@yjeanrenaud Now we need an app to Jam them or make them stop working altogether.
@Pamela1960 @yjeanrenaud That app is already there

Nearby Glasses is here to warn you when smart glasses are nearby.I hope it's useful for someone.
The app is open source, free and rather simple
https://github.com/yjeanrenaud/yj_nearbyglassesIt's also downloadable outside the Play Store. iOS port is in the making
@yjeanrenaud call it "Nearby Glassholes", time to bring back the term
-
@lxskllr @yjeanrenaud @daltux @manualdousuario Nope. It's well-estsblished that non-commercial licenses are not open-source, and F-Droid only accepts open-source.

@yjeanrenaud I real modern hero ! Well done! I await the IOS and will download.
Several commenters raise good points, the replies you made are perfect - well done!
-
@mosquete @yjeanrenaud Probably not the best idea given its security track record. Should be put on Accrescent though.
@asterisk @mosquete @yjeanrenaud hi, i am curious. Do you have links or information about fdroid security issues ?

We need to identify these as something other than smart glasses. No sense in using positive adjectives to describe these. -

@yjeanrenaud new spyware dropped

Smart glasses could be described as spyware (recording images and audio without your knowlege or consent).
This app isn't spyware. It's using information that is already available to your phone (Bluetooth IDs that other devices are already sending out on their own accord) and merely making it easier for you to be aware of that information.
-
/sarcasm
That could be done by politly asking...and if that won't help, there's always a slap.
@FandaSin @Pamela1960 @yjeanrenaud
A device like the HackRF or Flipper Zero might be able to send something interesting over wifi or Bluetooth. -

flipper might even do the scanning trick beforehands, so there would be no need for that app -
@yjeanrenaud now, we need someone to invent a portable EMP gun.
@fazalmajid @yjeanrenaud
With a Flipper Zero compatible pinout. -

@yjeanrenaud good on you! Great initiative.

@yjeanrenaud that's great and all, but as a non-gender-conforming glasses wearer with social anxiety and somewhat visible autism, do you understand how much harder you're going to make it for me to exist in a city?
no, a weak-ass disclaimer at the bottom of a paragraph of text isn't sufficient. the vast - overwhelming, i'd suggest - majority of people wearing glasses are wearing entirely un-smart glasses that are necessary for them to see shit. and at least some of us are going to be harassed because of this app. "some of us" meaning disproportionately disadvantaged folk - who are of course the least likely to be able to afford smart glasses anyway, but by far the easiest people to approach and smash the entirely necessary prosthetic glasses of.
in short - go back to the drawing board, and don't be so fucking ableist and irresponsible in your next iteration.
I don't think this is going to happen. People will not assume any regular pair of glasses are meta glasses simply because they got an alert. Almost all glasses are evidently not meta smart glasses. No cameras, and they are rarely so thick. Even thick glasses fail to rival Meta glasses' thickness.
And I also believe that hardly any of these app users who DO perceive meta glasses will approach the wearer. plus there's only a small userbase..
I understand the concern, I fiercly reject ableism.
I just don't think this in particular is going to incite ableist behavior. It seems no more likely than what meta-glasses-hating-people might do *without* a detector app.
One such impassioned hater could visually observe glasses they think are meta glasses, and harass the wearer.
If perhaps that hypothetical does occur, then Meta is ableist for making this evil false twin product that incites harassment to people wearing thick black glasses.
From each according to their ability, to each according to their need.

@yjeanrenaud Now we need an app to Jam them or make them stop working altogether.
@Pamela1960 @yjeanrenaud let's not forget that these devices could be very useful, maybe even life-changing for people with impaired sight, and possibly other disabilities too?
-
@FredricT @fuchsi @yjeanrenaud Cunty reply by someone who thinks surveillance glasses are cool?
@wendinoakland @FredricT @yjeanrenaud that you would need such an app as a spy.
Counter-intelligence? -

@lady_alys @yjeanrenaud oh, my bad. I guess I should have written anti-spyware then.
I thought it would be something essential for a spy to be aware of people with spy glasses. I believe Counter- intelligence is the word for that?

@yjeanrenaud hey, just a minor note. you might want to also state that blind folks often use those glasses, so thgere is a lil bit of nuance there to be aware of
