I think it's time to stop pretending that conservatism was ever a legitimate political position.
Per one Mr. Wilhoit, Conservatism consists of exactly one proposition, to wit: There must be in-groups whom the law protects but does not bind, alongside out-groups whom the law binds but does not protect.
This is not a recipe for a civilized society - this ends only one way & we're looking at it. Let's not go back to letting them pretend otherwise.

@jwcph Rightwing conservatism. Old school conservatives were a different thing.

@CStamp I used to think so, too - but not anymore. There is of course the question about where all these "decent" conservatives have been hiding themselves for the past few decades, but more importantly, everything on that sign to the left? Bullshit, all of it. Turns out they never fought for any of that for anyone except themselves.

@jwcph Not today, but these are the modern rightwing versions, who have appropriated the pc term “conservative” as a more palatable term for racist, misogynist, supremacist. It’s a joke that they’ve been allowed to get away with it.

@CStamp I still disagree. They haven't appropriated anything; "conservative" ALWAYS meant those things, it's just open now.
It was always a patriarchal = misogynist, power supremacist = racist world view - I won't even dignify it by calling it an ideology, because it isn't ideologically coherent, it's just "whatever benefits us, the white people holding power, and lets us keep that power forever".
That power structure & all its commensurate horror is always what they wanted to conserve.
