What is, in fact, nefarious about this is how these tools are being marketed by AI companies & deployed by management. What @missiggeek is talking about here is the human in the loop being used as an "accountability sink" & "moral crumble zone", per @pluralistic.
In simple terms, nobody with the power to fix the issue of bias has the slightest interest in doing so, because accuracy or fairness isn't on the list of reasons for deployment.
