It's my belief that the tech down slope began around 2010ish, with the dual events of the iPhone launch & the Big Data hype wave, shifting focus from tech products as products to what whould quickly become surveillance capitalism.
The iPhone marked the start of real-time personal data harvesting. It spread by being a pretty good device but it soon became clear that it's easier to coerce than to serve & under that model, product quality is waste & here we are.
