Welp, after a bunch of trial and, particularly, error, it seems the machine is running now - the rest is most likely down to the operator

@carla It seems like a very fine machine - no bells & whistles; it can only sew straight & zig-zag, no patterns or fancy seams, but it's easy to use & appears to be solid
there's a whole box of accessories which I have no idea how to use, I may post pictures & ask about it at some point -
