Ads.
On the lockscreen.
How. How do people live like this? Like seriously. Inundated by ads. I mean, not just the tracking and surveillance behind it... but blatant ads everywhere.
They PAY microsoft to show them ads on their lockscreen.
Remember adware? That would gum up your browsers in the early aughts? Like... that was considered malware at the time and removed by antivirus.
Can you turn this off? Is this a third party widget or something?
What....

@tinker @bsidesnova LOL and ads when you click on the "Start" menu to try to find your apps to run, and ads in the application bar. it's absolutely asinine. (I run Linux desktops now, because of this... switched fully two and a half years ago with disgust because of all those ads)

Yep, I made the switch to Ubuntu on my daily driver laptop a couple weeks ago, and honestly I'm kicking myself for not doing it sooner. The difference is just night and day.
And it's not like Linux on the desktop somehow magically got a whole lot better over the last few years. It's just that Windows got so much worse in comparison.
As with so many cases these days in the midst of modern enshittification, the secret to winning is apparently to just do nothing.

@DaveMWilburn @tinker @bsidesnova EXACTLY. Windows has gotten so unusable.

Microsoft is now using AI on all your photographs, for facial recognition, to train their AI.
Microsoft AI automatically saves your files to their servers, not locally.
(If you stop using MS you have to ask for your files, probably with a face photo.)

@tinker @bsidesnova I seem to remember I managed to turn that shit off on my work PC when I got it - and then it came back after an update, because of fucking course it did, & I just left it. It's just a work PC after all.
How anyone chooses to live with this shit for their personal computer use I shall never know. Had I not started out on Mac at home I would almost certainly have made the Linux jump many years ago.
