    Librarians removing AI from phones and teaching people they have a choice. Not political. Just information literacy, same as fighting book bans. The real work was always about helping people think critically.

      @Javvad Protecting knowledge and access to it is hella political, it's the one key metric of how vulnerable a population is to fascism

            @pascaline The problem is far worst. When you get "AI" bullshits for one subject you know well, you ll understand the garbage; but "AI" used by people who want to learn about... Huge mess.

              @Javvad
              The information-literacy framing here is important. Especially as AI gets folded into everyday tools by default.

              We’re actually discussing the workforce side of this today on Broadband Breakfast Live Online if anyone is interested:

                  They really are invaluable. We need people like them, people who can think for themselves and who are educated enough to properly evaluate results. I dread the developments.

                        @Javvad

                        Article sez: "While Brown’s long been skeptical of the purported benefits of technology for society...."

                        I understand that skepticism. I've always appreciatee many of its benefits.
                        BUT when technology is -forced- on people -- particulary when it's complex and potentially dangerous -- then skepticism is replaced by suspicion.

                          @Javvad It's *always* librarians. Look at history: each time there's a threat to the right to read, whenever there's censorship, _librarians_ step to the front and shield our society from governments gone wild.

                          They should be given medals, and treated as the heroes they are.
