Yeah, definitely. The speed and quality will vary a lot depending on which server you're looking at. It's worth glancing at the feed on the website before following it.

It's because the official app isn't necessarily the best way to view Mastodon. It was made because so many people were searching for "Mastodon" in the app stores and the Mastodon devs wanted to give them something official to download.
I'd strongly recommend using a third party app, Mastodon was originally designed for third party apps. (The official app didn't appear until 2022 but Mastodon started in 2016.) More info at https://fedi.tips/which-apps-can-i-use-should-i-use-the-official-app-or-a-third-party-app
