@GerardThornley Same. I wasn't ready for it just be effectively gone overnight. We're all scrambling to replacements.

@hacks4pancakes And nothing out there seems to fulfill all our criteria. Tuta appears to be a popular choice, but isn't without problems. I think that's another reason I hadn't already moved - when I last looked around, I wasn't happier about anything else.

I've done self-hosting before, but it's a lot of work and I'm not on top of things enough to keep it patched against current threats. Also, cloud IPs frequently get blocked but I wouldn't want it on my home network.

      Sigh...

@karadoc @hacks4pancakes I have been concidering moving to tuta, but it sounds so silly in Swedish that I probably couldn't give the address without starting to giggle.
Right now I'm trying zoho ... which sounds marginally better.

@401matthall I am suspecting that the CEO is a loooooottttt more responsible of that than any technical delayed feature. In my case, I canceled my subscription when he decide to support Trump. And this leak will be responsible for the cancelation of other people.

Ditto. I tolerated the crypto crap, but trump was the last straw. They're a bit name, but eff that. While not as polished, Tuta's marketing of, "yeeeah, we're not going to do that like Proton" is pretty solid.

@cgsines @hacks4pancakes The email part isn't even the worst for me. I finally managed to get the family to use a password manager, we each have our own vault, there is one for the wife and me for shared stuff and there is another one for all of us that has everything we also need on the kids' device.
I personally don't mind KeePass but for sharing with non-technical people it's a pain.

@tkissing looks like we're in the same boat. Family Email is elsewhere (https://mailbox.org), but KeepassXC caused too much friction (sync conflicts, UX issues).

Proton Pass just worked. The thought of having to move everything *again* is painful, but I'm not willing to support this company anymore. It's a shame.

I'm not sure what alternatives actually still exist that provide the same level of functionality, ease of use and which have not fallen into the slop trap.

@aphantastic @hacks4pancakes I've witnessed that sort of behavior from CEOs before, firsthand. You can feel the toxins in the air when you walk around the offices. And they surround themselves with enablers, each of whom has their own particular brand of toxic behavior.

@mweiss @aphantastic @hacks4pancakes ... so cutting just the head off the snake is not enough, a palace revolution is needed.

Very likely so, also from my experiences.

It should be feasible to locate some with integrity and lose the rest - just ask the folks on the ground who they would trust 🙏

@hacks4pancakes Not to toot *giggle* my own horn, but when I decided to de-Google two years ago, I did in fact consider the then-known, ahem, attitudes of the Proton CEO to be red flags & that's why I decided not to go with Proton, by far the most obvious option at the time.

When people tell us who they are, we should believe them & when a company is run by a person with questionable positions and/or ethics, we should assume that this is what the company stands for. Because it always is.
