@zackwhittaker I'm so tired of this limitless specter of productivity, especially in relation to expanding behaviors that limit user privacy.
I'm switching to grapheneOS when my current phone croaks.

@zackwhittaker Yeah, it's super creepy, def not OK and very much anti-privacy for the person(s) being recorded essentially without knowledge.
What they're doing there is encrypting a conversation for the person who records it in effect, whilst giving absolutely no right of consent to the other party. Super dooper creepy and really really not good.
This is REALLY not a good look.

Do I really need to check if someone has a new-ish IPhone before I talk to them, so I can show them that paper note I always carry with me that says: "You must put your spying device somewhere out of microphone reach before I talk to you at all"? -

As Apple explained their privacy approach I nevertheless am still holding my option - not gonna work that way -

@zackwhittaker where is the anti-tech tech? The jammers, the voice scramblers, the green laser glasses. Becuase I would pay good money for that shit. Clearly my privacy is being undone by foolishly associating with other humans.

@NMBA @zackwhittaker no idea how it applies in Canada, but I seem to remember reading that there’s a device (a TV, I think) that already does this and informs the owner that it’s their responsibility to tell anyone that could be recorded. Same old pass the buck bullshit will likely be used by Apple.

@zackwhittaker "Private," in this case, seems to mean that the company doesn't see what's on your phone, but it's creating an atmosphere in which no one in your ambient range is guaranteed privacy from you.

@zackwhittaker I was just about to toot about the weirdness of this feature. It has a summary "that let's you go back in time for 15 seconds", but also, somehow, "Privacy is protected at every step. These audio intelligence features do not create or store audio recordings."
These back to back statements are at odds with each other unless there's some slimey technicality legalese that allow them to be true like 'we write a transcript which technically isn't an audio recording'
@sylvie @zackwhittaker LG is also protecting my privacy at every step by recording everything in my entire house, even if in standby with a disconnected network. I feel safer already with these disclosures.

@sylvie @zackwhittaker the feature is always recording, but it is likely implemented as a ringbuffer, so it can not buffer more than 30 seconds of audio.
for spying, it would have to either compress and send off the audio in packets (you see traffic and shrinking hard drive space) OR build the much smaller transcript and send that one along with regular traffic (tpu use, wastes significant battery when there is a lot of talking)

@zackwhittaker it definitely feels unnecessary but tbh if anyone wanted to spy on people it’s not that hard to do it and have the audio. I guess the downside is it possibly captures more but burns more battery / disk space.
