@funkula @jalefkowit well that's the other thing people forget. The S&P dropped like 30% within 8 weeks before the Trump administration realized they had to do something

@funkula @jalefkowit all that government money was a reaction to a market crash that would have continued

(imo, good reaction from an administration that still had adults in the room)

@healyn @funkula @jalefkowit I'm re-reading William Gibson's "Pattern Recognition" and it really brings back the months after 9/11. And makes me think we memory-holed that first - the sheer enormity of that day could not be processed in any culturally-available way. So we've been getting a lot of practice.

@akamran @funkula @jalefkowit (particularly the immediate aftermath, living near NYC as a white guy, how friendly it all was. Then later hearing stories from anyone who looked like they could possibly be from the Middle East)

@healyn yeah, people oozed goodwill for like 2 weeks. I wore Navajo jewelry for months afterwards but my brother caught it hard (we're half Pakistani).

there are a lot of "memory-holed" events in US history, but Covid's peak was only 6 years ago

There were freezer trucks parked outside of hospitals to store corpses, because so many people were dying

It was not some kind of irrational panic, and there is a wildly large contingent of people in the world that views it as such

The best estimates I saw indicate a million deaths in America.

@healyn my job is tech project management. A lot of people had it much worse.

But a factor that does get forgotten is that medicine involves a huge amount of people. Pharmacists, admins, janitors, doctors, nurses, warehouse workers, IT staff, etc. A lot of us saw this directly.

had to block someone who quote posted this one, saying that peak has yet to come (scrolled through their timeline, and they're just constantly promoting a podcast)

@healyn that person explicitly listed she/her pronouns in her handle

I kept some measure of emotional balance by reading Mark Sumner's posts on DailyKos (now writing at Uncharted Blue) tracking nearly every aspect of the developing pandemic from case fatality rates in Italy in February to NYC transmission rates in March to info about masks, and on and on as we stocked up on canned goods and donated the latex gloves and handful of N95 masks we managed to find to the local hospital having no idea how bad it might get.

Fauci is a damn hero if anything.

@Tattooed_Mummy @BustaMarx @healyn something particularly rage making about this moment in 2026 is how theres hardly any space available for reckoning with the impacts, which are of course ongoing, but that initial few years was massively traumatic in ways nobody is able to socially/culturally process

@StevenSavage @healyn My sister worked a vax bus in Nashville. Had a magno lassi today and remembering her story of when the bus went to a local Indian community center, who kept them stocked with mango lassies and as much as they could eat all day. It truly was a weird time.

@healyn our family doctor of many many years died of it in the first few months. I wonder how the deniers managed to not know anyone either first or second hand

@Taweret @healyn some knew but continue to insist it was vaccines or direct murder by doctors for seemingly no motive whatsoever.
