So it's not just that Discord is requiring pictures or IDs to verify age. They're also going to be running AI against everything you do on there to "infer" your age... So make sure you "type old".
Additionally, Discord will implement its age inference model, a new system that runs in the background to help determine whether an account belongs to an adult, without always requiring users to verify their age. Some users may be asked to use multiple methods if more information is needed to assign an age group.”
@JessTheUnstill lol it just keeps getting stupider
-
@JessTheUnstill So just use punctuation. Got it.
@lizardbill @JessTheUnstill Indeed, my first thought was that all of those periods at the end of sentences that Zoomers think are grumpy and aggressive will save me! #GenX

Oohwww... You made the joke already 🥹 -
@faithisleaping @JessTheUnstill
Typing “lol” at the end of every sentence should do the trick.

@JessTheUnstill Ugh. It's likely because Discord is going IPO in March.
-
@FknHannu Nah, this Discord shit is like all of these things. Everyone will angrily shout about going somewhere else, then slink back the next week.
Yeah, because in the end there is no real alternative.
No one wants to go through the work of setting up their own niche foss server and then have to convince their friends to figure out.

@JessTheUnstill You know those IDs are going straight to ICE for American users.

@JessTheUnstill "Verification! Call that verification?? When I were a lad we had to chop off our fingertips and send them in the post".

@JessTheUnstill Another good reason to stop using Discord

@z3r0fox @JessTheUnstill Given what ICE is doing, it is extremely dangerous to use any site that does age verification in the US.

@itsVague @JessTheUnstill @FknHannu There is always an alternative, including signing off the Internet entirely. For my use, Mastodon is fine.
All the stuff that is complying with age verification is supported by ads, which in my case means I am already boycotting it. This will just mean a few more sites that like Facebook cannot even be read without an account. A few more sites I treat as 404 and move on from as I do paywalled or adwalled crap.
-
@JessTheUnstill I say we go with "Do you remember Chernobyl/Challenger/Fall of the Berlin Wall" as old typing.
.. just answer "yes, it was terrible/terrible/exciting" as an answer.
Instant age verification

@JessTheUnstill that's it I'm fucking done. Iml'm getting back into coding. Fuck all this proprietary Nazi tech I'm building better as an act of antifascist resistance

That's ... Really not an alternative when we have to do everything we can to INCREASE our connections to others, and the way people connect is via the internet. You're basically suggesting the digital equivalent of "well I don't like capitalism so I'll just move to my hut in the woods", which fine. Good luck with that. But most of us need jobs in order to eat. -

I prioritize complete disconnection from things that agitate me as I am autistic. Ads are a biggie here and age verification also sets me off.
Let's make another "hut in the woods" analogy. I am sensitive to scent products and am sometimes driven out of a space by them.
Some folks who are sensitive to almost all the airbourne chemistry of modern/industrialized life do in fact move to a hut in the woods or more often a community of rural cabins to escape it.
So my position on age verification is thus similar to someone already living in a rural cabin over petro fumes hearing that a major perfume trend and marketing offensive is underway in the nearest town. They just have one additional reason to avoid it, nothing changes for them.
You can have a job without being on Discord or Facebook of course, and rural areas DO have jobs, just not a lot of desk jobs.
