@CiaraNi A few months ago, I was working at a bar back in my hometown, and got into a conversation with someone about being from around there (no one seems to believe I am in the area from how little accent I have, and everyone from outside of the area tells me "to run back to the mountains, hillbilly" from how strong my accent is lol). He asked my last name, I told him, and he proceeded to go into a detailed history why I must be an awful person, full of history I wasn't even aware of, as miniscule as my great-great-whatever sold his great-great-whatever a nag that keeled over three days after purchase. Absolutely refused to have me serve him after, wouldn't even speak to me, even asked if there was a way to tip without me getting a share. Word eventually got around and he stopped getting served as quickly and folks stopped chatting with him.
Everyone is gonna much prefer the person who is friendly and polite to the spite and anger from some know-it-all who hates you for coming from where you do.
@Thatonepersonwithaface Bizarre behaviour. People can be so strange and strangely hostile.

@CiaraNi Scottish Gaelic speaker here, very amused by the idea of someone pronouncing "scone" to rhyme with Scottish Gaelic pronunciation of Eòghan. "Would you like a skyoh-an with your tea?" #SkonForever
@redthewizard Imagine it in a flat Dublin accent and it might work better.

@CiaraNi My explanation to myself has been that some folks are looking for boundaries in an increasingly vague world, that they're trying to separate themselves in a world where folks are becoming increasingly aware media lied to them, they aren't super special individuals, that there are folks who have the same habits and quirks they do.
My friend Hawk says I'm overthinking, some folks are just jerks haha.
-
@NudelnAlDente @psneeze Ignoring for a moment the distressing notion of a cheese scone of any pronunciation, I think I am going to spell scone sceoghan from now on.
-
@jeridansky It's not the most phonetic of names, admittedly. But not the least phonetic of names either, by Irish standards.
-
@NudelnAlDente @psneeze I will keep that in mind next time I'm in Scotland

@Thatonepersonwithaface @CiaraNi a lot of men are desperate to be unique and instead of being kind (which is coded as feminine) they choose to be insufferable know it alls
-
@jbenjamint Doune. Skoon. Rhymes with loon.
@CiaraNi @jbenjamint @mdreid @Wifiwits @DavidBridger When I was a wee boy my dad told me we were going to Doune Castle*. I misheard it as Doom Castle and was very disappointed when he put me straight.
*They filmed some of Monty Python and the Holy Grail there.
PS. Scone is a Scots word and we say it skon, but if you guys want to sound silly that's absolutely fine

@CiaraNi what I like about this is you manage to tell people who are doing it wrong that they are doing it wrong by telling people that they are doing it wrong without doing it wrongly yourself. Hats off

@coolcalmcollected @CiaraNi Jokes on them, my friend Willie is known as a very kind, genial person, but we also both got moonshine drunk, started lifting cars off the ground, and he's considered cool for both.

@bodhipaksa Doom Castle - I would have been disappointed too.
"Scone is a Scots word and we say it skon, but if you guys want to sound silly that's absolutely fine" - oh no, that's a credible argument. I may have to revise my stance. Or just avoid it by switching to muffins from now on.

@johnlorimer @annika I'm only on Mastodon too. I am not a nerd (that I'm aware of), but I like the fact that it's human-sized and full of humans and people actually talk to one another in here. A nice corner of the internet, as you say.
(There are other sort of nerds than computer nerds.)
(I don't know if you are or are not, only you can be the judge. Just be aware that being a nerd correlates poorly with ability/willingness to install Linux.)

@Wifiwits @DavidBridger @CiaraNi most of the survivors were muffins and bagels, thus forever changing English tea habits.
@robparsons @Wifiwits @DavidBridger @CiaraNi
Someday, given the dubious existence of the “cronut”, there is going to be a cross-breed between scones and doughnuts (or donuts, for us USAians).
Will it be spelled sconut or scoughnut? Will it rhyme with do(ugh)nut or sound more like “sonnet”? And don’t get me started on the Skoonuts the town of Scone will make.

@dpnash @Wifiwits @DavidBridger @CiaraNi Sonnet. It will have to be sonnet.

@robparsons @Wifiwits @DavidBridger @CiaraNi Excellent. “Scoughnut” it is, “ough” pronounced with the vowel in “cot” (which may be yet another freaking “ough” sound, if you pronounce “ought” or “bought” with the “or” vowel rather than the “cot” vowel).

I saw the same thing happening with many of my former Twitter mutuals: exodus to Mastodon in late 2022 (when bsky did not even exist), then moving to bsky as soon as it opened up. -
@toothless My thoughts and prayers are with you
-
@psneeze That someone would be me, if they pronounced it Skon, not scone-rhymes-with-Eoghan
