    RFK Jr has no scientific training. He's a history major with a law degree who worked as an environmental advocate but has never spent any meaningful time doing science, or understanding how science is done. This isn't "an alternative scientific view". It's just kooky opinions. https://x.com/atrupar/status/2083907234405269638?s=20

    But he can tell you how much the cocaine got stepped-on just by smell.

    JrBob is still a junkie. And he's killing Americans and spreading disease.

      @SeanCasten

      Not to be mean.

      I mean, I think it's okay to be mean to bad people. Yeah, calling out Kennedy's deficiencies shouldn't be done primarily to be mean, but bullying a bad person seems to me like a perfectly fine secondary objective.

      We didn't bully Dubya, or Cheney, or Reagan into ragequitting politics, and look where being polite to villains got us.

      @Legit_Spaghetti @SeanCasten

      It is absolutely fine to be "mean" to a man who is deliberately harming people. I don't care what excuse they give, the GOP is about harming people. I truly believe they get off on it.

      RFK Jr. is dangerous not because of his background but because HE WANTS TO HURT PEOPLE. And he does not care who he kills or harms.

        But he is also evil. He refuses to take responsibility for the harm his actions have done to other people, and that's a pretty good definition of evil.

          @BlueDot @SeanCasten

          I agree. It is evil to cause the return of childhood illness we had all but eradicated because of a gut feeling. Or he was convinced by liars and grifters.

          Politicians are, at very least, not supposed to actively harm the communities they are representing. In a perfect world, they might actually make things better. But doing things like the health sec has done are evil, and our society is drastically worse as a result of RFK Jr.

          I can appreciate that OP is a scientist and wants to avoid using the word evil. But in this instance, it is applicable. It's also important to call out evil when we see it. There have thus far been zero consequences for the monsters ruining society, and that is just not alright with me.

              @SeanCasten The bigger problem is that a majority of U.S. senators sat in a room with that guy, asked him questions for several days, and concluded that the most ridiculous, unqualified person possible should be in charge of the nation’s health department.

                  "Health influencer" is the contemporary description of RFK Jr.'s real expertise. He's basically a salesman who sells people on an allegedly healthy lifestyle and associated lifestyle products.

                  Trump has hired a ton of influencers rather than people with real expertise. Hegseth is a defense influencer, Ka$h Patel is a legal influencer, Dr. Oz is a health influencer, etc. Not too surprising, since Trump is basically an influencer himself.

                    @SeanCasten Sorry, but he is evil. Because of his twisted ideology, babies are dying & kids are dying. Plus he supports a truly evil administration who mass murders school children in bombings, separates children from families, & runs concentration camps.

                          @OGJester @SeanCasten yep. The idea that a president should automatically get his choice and the senate should t stand in the way is asinine. Advice and consent is there for a reason. A unanimous "absolutely not" was the only correct outcome

                            the problem with the word "evil" is that it's a kid's fairytale word and is popular with various crackpots

                            so we shun use of the word because of a vague discomfort, a feeling of guilt by association

                            but shunning use of the word "evil" means we surrender a powerful tool of communication

                            so i say:

                              Self-interested megalomaniacs always want the role ahead of anyone who actually might be capable of doing it.

                                The danger however comes when we confuse his title for his expertise. "Secretary of Health Kennedy says ___" gives the air of legitimacy. Far better to say "Heroin addict Kennedy", "Man who eats road kill and has a brain worm", "Harvard drug dealer" or even "Nuzzi's ex boyfriend".

                                    @SeanCasten i'll just say it: "FUCK RFK JR." a disgrace to his family and to every single individual with a slice of common sense.

                                      But he is also evil. He refuses to take responsibility for the harm his actions have done to other people, and that's a pretty good definition of evil.

                                      RFK Jr is a moral and intellectual coward. He actively and loudly pushes dangerous deadly conspiracies then actively and loudly denies he has any culpability for the predicted harm and death. Measles in Samoa.

                                        Not to be mean. But because all of those things do a better job of attuning the public to whatever he is about to say next. And it's the best way to ensure that the kooky shit he says doesn't get any more people killed. /fin

                                        @SeanCasten I understand what you mean. I am from Gaza, and I have seen how the decisions and actions of people in power can affect ordinary lives in painful ways. Here, we live with immense suffering, uncertainty, and daily struggles just to survive. I hope the world pays more attention to the consequences of words and actions, because behind every crisis there are real people, families, and lives.

                                          And that's fine! If I'm on trial, I don't want a lawyer who is explaining that my alibi makes it 48% likely that I'm not guilty and depends substantially on the jury cherry picking data from the evidence presented even if that is factually true. 🙂

                                          @SeanCasten To go philosophical: science vs. law is, as I came to a belated realisation some years ago, dialectic vs. rhetoric.

                                          Science seeks to arrive at truths and better understanding.

                                          Lawyers and politicians often are acting to persuade and convince.

                                          Realising the difference made many of my previous frustrations with online discussion clear: I was bringing a dialectical knife to a rhetorical gunfight.

                                          Of course, at the time a lawyer I knew online piped up to contradict all of this, until I pointed out just what it was they were doing 😺

                                          There are times you want someone powerfully persuasive running things. And there are times you want someone dead-set on finding truth.

                                          RFK Jr. unfortunately seeks to persuade based on myths, falsehoods, and lies. As you note, wrong person for the job.

                                          Oh, and title-expertise confusion is what that frequently-abused notion of "appeal to authority" is. Again, RFK Jr. is poster-child for that.

                                          But philosophers vs. sophists? That's one long-lived battle.
