@DeliaChristina Here's how I would handle this given the use of surveillance cameras on the subway:
1: stand directly under the camera
2: Taunt the Nazi. Insult his politics, call him a coward, challenge his supposed manhood.
3: wait for him to throw the first punch while the cameras roll
4: Block the punch and follow through with a single backfist to the side of the head. Down he goes and the cameras prove it is self-defense. If he doesn't go down, keep fighting until he does.
Note that this does not require doing anything I do not routinely practice on the heavy bag.

@drwho @DeliaChristina oh yeah I believe that was a requirement of the peace agreement at the end of WW2 but even friends my age that were born in the 80s got this education that it is the responsibility of everyone to keep it from happening again. That is the sense that I got from talking to them but maybe it’s different depending on where in Germany you are from.

@irene @DeliaChristina In the sci.tech track at my high school, European history was required. US history was for the manufacturing.tech/votech track. We cleared the entire textbook that year but it stopped at 1850.ev.
What I know about everything after WW1 I know from my grandparents and reading books on my own time.

@WhiteCatTamer @DeliaChristina So long as the Nazi starts the physical action self defense is 100% legal. Any weapon you can legally carry will be legal to use against any opponent who draws on you first too. Finally, NYC's gun laws are on borrowed time with the current SCOTUS.
One special case: please DO NOT USE pepper spray in a subway car or more generally indoors! It will affect other people than the target.

@WhiteCatTamer @DeliaChristina Well, I do make a point of getting to cover after any fight, win or lose. In cities I normally travel by bike not subway and thus can beat the police response time.
Getting a warrant and bringing charges after a clear-cut, camera-proven case of self defense is a much higher hurdle than a snap-judgement, on the scene arrest. Not impossible as the cops and Nazis are allied here of course, but a much higher threshold.
Finally, there is also the case where the Nazi does NOT take the bait and won't throw the first punch. In that case, you have shown them to be a big talker in front of a subway car (or a sidewalk) full of spectators.

@DeliaChristina Gonna assume what went down was that he was maybe using weaselly terms for his eugenics nonsense so people would tolerate him if he's not just spitting intense hate. Guessing also that people are distracted by other stuff, they haven't got time for him in terms of hearing him out or beating him unconscious at least. Point being that people are just not going to fight, they're tired and frazzled enough that they won't bother and there's also the fear of getting vanished by the local gestapo. Not making excuses for them but I understand when people have learned helplessness, they feel like they don't have the power to fight back so they make their own excuses for being avoidant. Doesn't help that their propaganda is so effective it's got someone they hate thinking it's a simple difference in opinion.
