I'm out of the 40's, had some of those diseases and was lucky. Had Friends that weren't so lucky. If people want their children healthy they will get them vaccinated, those who don't aren't paying attention. It's as simple as that. How many have had measles of late.

Not because babies didn't die, but because there either was no grave stone for them and∕or those graves were long removed.

In french cemetery there's a lot of familial graves, and the babies are often a line on those.
When you see a grave with only a dead baby name on it, that's a dead baby with rich parents.

even in family graves a lot families didn’t even consider adding really young children there.
like died before age 3? not relevant!
why? because it was REALLY common.
If it survived the first few years? then it might survive into adulthood.

@dat @luckytran I've seen a lot of babies under one in old cemeteries, but that may be local custom.

I'm all for vaccinating kids when the evidence for efficacity is so clear - but I believe the biggest contributions to the decline in infant mortality have come from public health works - especially clean piped water and public sewers - or state-regulated septic tanks - district nurses, etc, etc... state infrastructure taking care of its people.
You have a point. But it doesn't lessen or invalidate the efficacy of vaccines in preventing deaths of children who survived infancy

Why the big difference between that graph (from the UN) and this page (from US Census data) for deaths below age 5 in 1880?
The death rates in the graph appear around 50% higher than the census population mortality table for 1880.
My recollection is that even the American Experience table from the 1840's (which probably had the mortality rates padded to slant the odds in favor of the insurance companies) showed only about 25% mortality before age 5 (although the juvenile extension part of the table may have been added later).

@GeofCox @luckytran Those are all great of course - but if we had all of those and not vaccines, then MORE children than before would die of things like diptheria, because they'd be around to catch them, rather than dying even younger of cholera or malnutrition.

My grandmother was born on an Alabaman farm in the early 1920's. Out of 11 kids, 8 of them made it.
Until very recently, almost every adult had a few siblings they had lost. It is mind-boggling that anyone would want to return to that.

The census data I found shows the number of deaths in the US by age right in the table. Where those numbers came from might be the problem. If the idea was that every death certificate would somehow get counted, then we have two questions -- how did they count them, and what about the people who died with no death certificate (as of the date of the count. Some bodies don't turn up for quite a while). If they tried some other method, it might involve something like what has been used in recent years to estimate the census undercount.

@GeofCox @luckytran believing that is to ignore the evidence for the massive effect vaccines have had.
It's important to have sanitation. But it doesn't stop highly infectious viruses like measles from spreading. It just doesn't.
What does is highly trained immune systems from vaccines, keeping sick people away from others and a robust testing and advice system. -
