@Elizafox Because China already won those races. In our System it would require too much investment in basic infrastructure which wouldn't translate to stock prices. Neither parliament nor We The People would allow wasting so much money without immediate cash profit.

How many groups have said that AI is likely to kill us all, but they're *still* racing towards it?I guess people are more concerned about *which* AI kills us than *whether* AI kills us. I mean, we'll be dead either way, so why does it matter?
@pockets @Elizafox Because LLMs are merely probability machines. They are, in itself, not dangerous. But take stupid and/or malicious humans and anything can become a weapon. If you give your toddler access to your bank account, the result will be disastrous but you wouldn't put your toddler in a high security prison.

@elexia Can't comment on whole Europe, but at least in Lithuania healthcare is at the best state it ever was

@gytisrepecka @Elizafox interesting, cause every country I know enough about to comment on is getting worse. usually in large part due to deliberate sabotage from major political forces (for example in the UK and Germany), but also in part cause they just want to pretend the pandemic is over and so they let staff and patients get sick over and over and over because doing even as little infection prevention as pre-pandemic is politically fraught now.

Only thing to monitor is the right time to withdraw from the hype.

@aburgerabz @Elizafox Good question. With saying “we” it’s implied that I should identify with those who do these things. I don’t. I’m not in a race with China in anything. I don’t want the elected leaders to be either, but unfortunately they don’t represent me too well.

@Elizafox could we at least have a car race? Races are often done with cars! I'd love to be able to buy a $15k electric hatchback in bubblegum pink with 500 miles of range that fast charges in 5 minutes, has solar panels on the roof, and was made with safety regulations that ensure I won't be trapped inside if it crashes. But no because capitalism hates competition.
