@teclista @mhz @jwildeboer We french people didn't seem to know the first time either, but since it looks more like macron vs lepen, then they probably know what they are getting into, indeed.

The president in Portugal has no executive or legislative power. Luís Montenegro, the current prime minister, is a lot more right wing than Seguro.

          Glad to hear this!
The bad news, in France, is that the 66% who don't want the far right can't get their egomaniacal politicians to work together to stop them.

@mhz @jwildeboer he's very center left, more to the center, than left, but still within the limits of it.

He was the leader of the Socialist Party for a few years.

@jwildeboer Still 1/3rd vote for this fascist. Same guy that says we need 3 more Salazares. These people voting for him must celebrate the 25th of April just to go to the beach.

@bit still this being a Presidential election, doesn't mean all these voters will transfer to him on legislative elections. Many voted for the fascist just because they didn't wanted a centre left candidate.

@Catarina @jwildeboer I voted for him more enthusiastically than I was expecting. Despite being a centrist, he still is a progressive and I am hoping he will set up clear guardrails with regards to what the political discussion should be about and how democratic political parties should seek an understanding on some of the pressing issues. Not super optimistic about that last one, but one can always hope. Seems like an upgrade with regards to his predecessor, at least.

@flying_saucers @jwildeboer I was positively surprised by the first round. I always expected the initial favourite Gouveia e Melo to tank once the campaign started, but I thought media favourite Marques Mendes would get to the second round easily, since he had been preparing the public narrative for 10 years now. Ventura was always going to lose the 2nd round. He has a dedicated cult around him that always show up, but has a massive rejection rate in the rest of the population.

@jmcs Media is already preparing their candidate for the next Presidential election by hiring the former Liberal Party leader as a commenter, replacing Marques Mendes.

Still this was a win worthy of celebration. Seguro really symbolizes the result he got by getting the united votes of those who love Democracy.

@bit It's the most likely, it also doesn't mean the support for him might not grow anyway, there's a lot of time between now and the next legislative election (if everything goes regularly).

@mhz he doesn't have a program. The office of the Presidency of the Republic, doesn't have executive or legislative power.

Seguro has been in politics for many decades, he's very well known for most of us. He was the leader of the Socialist Party, which is centre left, and he has always been on the centrist wing, always proposing less progressive proposals, always more accepting of the centre right proposals.

Still, he's known for his strong personal integrity, but being soft.
