    The good news: #Portugal votes for Center-left Seguro as president with an overwhelmingly clear 66.82% majority. Far-right candidate Ventura is the clear loser. Thank you, wonderful people of Portugal!

    @jwildeboer I am once again reminded of what I said after the Canadian and Australian elections, the far right loses in any system not completely rigged in their favour

      @jwildeboer yeah, Seguro was the lesser evil on the ballot. I and many others voted for him not because we agree or believe his policies, but because we had to keep Ventura out.

      @Catarina @jwildeboer I voted for him more enthusiastically than I was expecting. Despite being a centrist, he still is a progressive and I am hoping he will set up clear guardrails with regards to what the political discussion should be about and how democratic political parties should seek an understanding on some of the pressing issues. Not super optimistic about that last one, but one can always hope. Seems like an upgrade with regards to his predecessor, at least.

              @Catarina @jwildeboer worth noting that the current job holder is a social conservative with very thin progressive coating. People don't completely hate him only because he's a good sport and manages to maintain an aura of pope-like infallibility, which works quite well in a country which is still 100% culturally catholic.

                  @Ladylullabunk @jwildeboer

                  Voted for him in national territory:
                  1.687.106

                  Voted for him outside our country:
                  42.265

                  Small number of people, don't really make much difference.

                  However if you look at the percentage it gets scary. Those 42.265 votes are actually 51,88% of the international vote. That's potentially 1.752.298 voters, but good thing abstention in international voting reaches 95.26%. 😁

                              The bad news, in France, is that the 66% who don't want the far right can't get their egomaniacal politicians to work together to stop them.

                                      @bit still this being a Presidential election, doesn't mean all these voters will transfer to him on legislative elections. Many voted for the fascist just because they didn't wanted a centre left candidate.

                                        @ubik I wouldn't call him a progressive...

                                          @flying_saucers @jwildeboer I was positively surprised by the first round. I always expected the initial favourite Gouveia e Melo to tank once the campaign started, but I thought media favourite Marques Mendes would get to the second round easily, since he had been preparing the public narrative for 10 years now. Ventura was always going to lose the 2nd round. He has a dedicated cult around him that always show up, but has a massive rejection rate in the rest of the population.

                                          @jmcs Media is already preparing their candidate for the next Presidential election by hiring the former Liberal Party leader as a commenter, replacing Marques Mendes.

                                          Still this was a win worthy of celebration. Seguro really symbolizes the result he got by getting the united votes of those who love Democracy.
