My dad has an iPhone 18 Pro Max. He's been using Apple's Braille Screen Input on it with great success. Then last night, it suddenly stopped working well for him, and he hasn't figured out what happened or how to fix it. He can type things like a full cell, dots 4-5-6, l, etc. but can't type real words on it. Anyone know what might have gone wrong? Please boost for reach. Thanks.

@jaybird110127 Has he tried recalibrating?

@BorrisInABox How do you do that?

@jaybird110127 Tap and release all three dots on the right hand side, then quickly do the same on the left. It can be a bit tricky. It should say that dots have been recalibrated when it works.

@BorrisInABox Thanks, will tell him.

@jaybird110127 from claude:
Those examples are a big clue: a full cell, dots 4-5-6, and **l** (dots 1-2-3) all look the same when flipped **top to bottom**. If his dot positions got inverted (1
3, 4
6), those would still work while almost every real letter would come out wrong. That points to a dot-mapping or orientation problem, not a broken feature. -

- **Recalibrate the dots.** Calibration may have been reset by an accidental touch or by holding the phone differently. He can recalibrate inside Braille Screen Input by quickly tapping dots 4-5-6 and then 1-2-3 (or all six fingers, depending on the iOS version), with fingers placed where he normally types.

@jaybird110127 - **Reverse Dot Positions setting.** Go to Settings → Accessibility → VoiceOver → Braille → Braille Screen Input and see whether a reverse or flip dot positions option was toggled.
- **Tabletop vs. screen-away mode.** If the phone switched modes, or the orientation lock changed, the layout flips. Turning orientation lock on and re-entering BSI in his usual position often fixes it. -

That would garble words differently, though, so it's the less likely cause here.

@jaybird110127 It is... inconvenient that probably we'd need to see it to fix it. Which is kind of a nonstarter since you're both blind...
You could in theory take a screenshot and use regular voiceover controls to text or email it to yourself from his phone then have someone you trust look at it.
But honestly this may be the kind of thing that's hard or impossible to fix without being sighted yourself. Which of course is fucked up since this is *meant* to be an accessibility feature for blind people.

@jaybird110127 @realn2s
I have no experience with that device but my mother describes similar issues when she accidentally switched keyboard layouts. In her case a different language, so the keys have a different „value“. My immediate thought was, the underlying keyboard layout has changed.
