It also complicates name certificates. You really don't want the people who own example.example on the ICAAN system and those who own it on the hypothetical EU global root to be able to impersonate each other's hosts.

There's enough ipv6address space to give every train o of sand their own address. Domain names and DNS entries are just artificial scarcity.

Come off it. 24 TB disks are $600. Plenty of stock. If $600 is too much to spend to keep your organization going, then best to shut down and make space for someone else. That's 2 pizzas a month.
And it wasn't any internet provider freezing them out, it was the US hijacking their DNS record. One of these things is not like the other, to quote Sesame Street.
Not all of us are running potato computers at home. Some of us have decent home labs with lots of storage.Mine is 100 Terabytes, which is piddly compared to some who have a multiple petabytes.

@barbra @anneroth @cavallette An alternate DNS root only helps to the extent that anyone uses it. Since few people use those, it's unlikely to help much. And the challenges are far wider than just losing DNS names: A/I will lose bank accounts, hosting space, and most other services provided by businesses at risk from US secondary sanctions on those doing business with A/I.

I already proposed a workaround that doesn't require DNS at all. And would render future attempts at DNS hijacking impossible. Easy, cheap, fast - for once you CAN pick all 3.

NXDOMAIN means your domain is no longer in the DNS system.
So yes, it was yanked.
The DNS system is artificial scarcity. There's no NEED to translate between ipv6 addresses and domain names - just entering the ipv6 address in your browser address bar gets you to the site.
There are enough ipv6 addresses for every human that ever existed to have a bunch, so it's not a resource that is limited.
And there's no reason you couldn't bookmark it and label it whatever you want so you can find it by the name you assigned it.
No more "domainers" squatting on good domain names.
And no more yanking domains by enemy states.

Who cares if domain names overlap?
A/I could have just asked people to enter their server's ipv6 address into their hosts file. And if you're going to do that, they could have self-hosted their own servers. It's not that expensive. Or that hard.
As word got out, more people could do it. Then people could have posted clickable links to the ipv6 address all over the place - no need for everyone to edit their own hosts file.
I was doing this 30 years ago so I could stream my music collection at the office over a crappy 1 mbps cable modem link - multiple connections worked fine.
