@VANTABlack2000 @withinity welcome to Mastodon! It can take some time to find your feet here, but once you've found your "neighbors" there's nothing quite like it elsewhere on the social web. As another reply mentioned, tags are an essential method of finding topics you're interested in here. Definitely a good idea to find some you're interested in (though most game stuff I see doesn't really use them

Hi I am new to Mastodon, I don't really know what I am doing here yet. Does anyone know of any cool nonprofits or gamedev people to follow? Currently my feed is just the internet archive. I love that, but it might not lead to a very satisfying experience.

Yeah, Paesano's is what I consider Midwest good.
Living in LA as a postdoc with some spending money and occasional Dad or PI-funded dinners at *really* good restaurants will pretty much ruin a palate for Midwest good eats.
And I'm not sure that dining out is cheaper here. We plunked $75 for one cocktail, one beer, a small wood-fired pizza, and a side of asparagus, tip not included. Nice location though, near the botanical garden on a deck overlooking the creek.
@MCDuncanLab Yea I would say that's about par for the course here as well.
Detroit has some fancy dining on that island. I was invited to an event there for some science thing. It was more of a boys club than good food though :/.
I'll have to check out the west coast one day. Boston and the cape is great for seafood.
Also if you ever need someone whose good at chemical data analysis with stats/ML I can probably help :D.

"cool nonprofit" is in the eye of the beholder, but in the US, most nonprofits are required to file a tax return called a form 990
eg, if you search for say the Southern Poverty Law center, you find

so maybe not that cool
@failedLyndonLaRouchite Ewy. I am all for founders making some money to live and take care of themselves. But imagine what you could do to forward a cause by taking 1/4 of that salary

A filtered feed based on topics of books going to the internet archive would be very nice though. Every few months I go on there and search for the same topics to try and hoard more ebooks I don't have time to read

@failedLyndonLaRouchite I believe it. Sometimes I think the only way to do it is to start my own where I actually make sure people are getting something out of it. The problem is I don't think those ones get much money :(.

@withinity The local timeline is hidden away under the "Live feeds" button on the sidebar if you're using the web interface.
Peak hours (as I'm able to observe them) are generally around morning to noon on week days in the Americas and in European time zones, and the most significant peaks are during the day on Saturdays. There's no magic recommendation algorithm here so the way to get eyes on something is to post it when people are active (and to post to hashtags people follow).
