    @eniko

    It shows at least that you devalue the human effort that goes into other creative efforts.

    "I'm a writer. Generative AI could never do what I do. But banner art? That's perfect for generative AI."

    "I'm a video essayist. I research, write, film, direct, and produce all my videos. I take pride in my artistry and technical skill. But I need some music to play in the background so I'll use generative AI."

      because if you used AI for that they cannot know what else you used AI for and so they cannot know if they can trust the core of your content and its message

      hope that helps

        @eniko When I use AI, I hold full responsibility for truth and accuracy because AI simply can't. I will never blame AI for my mistakes. That would be rediculous. You shouldn't distrust my entire work for using AI.

          @eniko Today I discovered my employer replaced a purpose-made, pixel-by-pixel, hand-crafted drawing on a blog post my teammate wrote by a LLM-generated image. Reason? Consistency across articles. Yup, all articles look shitty now, well done. No heads up, no ask, just the violence of a personal work thrashed.

            @eniko one of the things that argument makes me wonder: why bother in the first place if it's a "throwaway" image? If it's so unimportant that the author feels it's worth no more than some gen AI slop, does their project even need that asset in the first place?

                  @eniko Even if there wouldn't be all the other concerns, just "not liking it" should be reason enough when it comes to art of all things, which has no inherent value, only the value the beholder attributes to it.

                  Not putting effort or intent in a part of your art surprisingly reduces the value for the beholders who value effort and intent above volume and content.

                    @eniko If you don't care about the thing you're making, why should your audience? That's the real question. Any asshole can prompt an AI, it's not special. Having a craft and dedicating your time to it has value.

                      @eniko definitely agree with the sentiment! AI should be kept outside of any actual content creation, regardless of what type of content, however I think it can be useful as an ancillary tool (e.g. won't use it to generate code, but I will use it to review code as it can sometimes refer to subjects I'm not familiar with which I can then read up on and therefore end up learning more myself). So like all tools, I think it comes down to how people use it, and people are abusing it 😅

                          Yes! I just made that exact decision with a document which had a bunch of illustrations with this same caption:

                          "Original illustration produced by the author with AI support"

                          I immediately thought, the author probably used AI on the text, too. That means I can't trust it.

                          I'm sure the OP has probably read this paper but I'm adding a link for folks who have not. It shows how meaning can be changed even when the LLM "only" modified the grammar:

                          I havent read the whole 95 page study report but this caught my eye;

                          ... usage among
                          students is a function of pre-existing writing confidence and skills (Picton et al., 2025), with students
                          who enjoyed writing before using AI tending to augment AI outputs with their own thinking, whereas
                          those who struggled with writing are more likely to adopt AI-generated text wholesale.....

                          I wonder about teachers using ai to grade; are students being forced to the mean of achievement?

                                  @eniko For me it's more: "If you've heard all the ethical arguments against it but decide that they don't matter for $reasons, I will still try to avoid you and your work, even the stuff you claim is completely L*M-free."

                                  The example I keep seeing is "character portrait for a private TTRPG campaign that nobody's making money from" and ... maybe just do an image search, find something from an artist, and credit them? That'd probably fall under "fair use" and also isn't plagiarism.

                                      @eniko When I use AI, I hold full responsibility for truth and accuracy because AI simply can't. I will never blame AI for my mistakes. That would be rediculous. You shouldn't distrust my entire work for using AI.

                                        @shnizmuffin care to elaborate on what you think is wrong exactly? Not a lot of information to go off of in just a single word!

                                          @eniko your other (valid!) point aside, it seems pretty common for people to fail to realize that mass communication is not the same as interpersonal communication.
                                          They think, "shouldn't you give me the benefit of the doubt?" and no, I can't do that, I have limited attention and 500 games competing for it, ONE red flag is plenty to make me forget a game ever existed.
                                          If I'm talking to a real person, maybe I do go "ok how much do they have invested in this?", "do they KNOW how bad this is?", etc

                                          @kevingranade @eniko Ya, life is too short to engage with slop knowingly.

                                          I have decades of incredible creative work that's all lovingly archived, and more than I can possibly engage with coming out every day. Why should I willingly degrade my own lived experience when I could just not?

                                          When someone uses slop in something they are creating, I just don't engage. It's a very easy filter, and I still have more than I could ever hope to discover out there waiting for me.
