    @annika To keep the answer simple - I think it is the only corner of the internet left that is worthwhile. It aligns with my values.
    It helps that I am a life long nerd.

      @DavidBridger Haha, well this almost but not quite convinces me that Skon is a perfectly cromulent pronunciation.

        @CiaraNi @annika When the first exodus away from the bird place happened, a lot of the Gen X Australians I hung out with come over to Mastodon and did not last long. They are mostly on Bluesky now.
        I have made the decision to only have a presence on Masto now.

        @johnlorimer @CiaraNi @annika
        I saw the same thing happening with many of my former Twitter mutuals: exodus to Mastodon in late 2022 (when bsky did not even exist), then moving to bsky as soon as it opened up.

            @mdreid Skwon! Well maybe if you're in the process of eating one, then with your mouth full that's what Scone sounds like

            @CiaraNi @mdreid @jbenjamint @Wifiwits @DavidBridger Scone rhymes exactly with Doune (another very historic town just down the road).

            Hope that helps.

                  The fact that the thread under this Serious Toot has ascended into a pleasant war about the correct way to pronounce Scone is why I love the Fediverse

                  @CiaraNi
                  A minor point of disagreement!
                  You might have ask whether the cream or the jam should go on first and sparked a civil war in Britain.

                      @AncTreat5358 @franco_vazza Me too, with the hashtags. When I realised how they worked here and that I could *follow* a hashtag, that's when the Fediverse clicked for me. And the way they work as your own personal Content Warnings. Brilliant. Although I also, like you say, still stumble sometimes and forget to tag a toot with, for example, USPol.

                            @cwsound This resonates. It's a step-by-step process, slow, as you say. I have only just finished getting the last of my photos off OneDrive and that was a big, slow job. Very satisfying, though.

                              @CiaraNi I signed up on mastodon.social because it seemed the obvious choice, and because the explanations of servers and "instances" were invariably written from an unhelpful technical point of view with no explanation of why any of that had any impact on me, and because I could find no information about the support capabilities and average lifetimes of individual Mastodon servers.

                              @Corb_The_Lesser @CiaraNi Exactly. And it took some weeks or months after joining Mastodon, until I learned about all the downsides of small servers. Hence, I stayed where I was. Bigger isn't always better. But smaller isn't always better, too. It depends on what's important to you.
