This is blowing my mind: The Dutch government decided to start switching from Windows to NixOS because it doesn't have a company behind it, increasing their sovereignty. They've ruled out OpenSUSE and Fedora _because_ of their commercial ties (SUSE and IBM/Red Hat).

@gerrit They have decided no such thing, sadly. This is small and unfunded experiment.

@bert_hubert yeah, "start" is doing a lot of work in that sentence. I'm under no illusion that MS lobbyists will do their best to kill off this experiment, but I found it fascinating that they specifically did not want a company behind the open source project. Usually governments wouldn't touch a project without a big company backing it.

@gerrit How long until they all figure a (supra)government agency doing dedicated in-house coding might be the best path. Maybe call it EUnix?

@gerrit and I think the main nixos guy is Dutch, as well, which just adds more good feelings, I'd suppose; or doesn't really hurt.

@gerrit this is funny if you follow the nix(os) community and the amount of drama there has been around the leadership of the project. I'm explicitly thinking about switching away from it because of this

I guess it doesn't matter for a government, considering the leadership is mostly dutch based
